Job Overview

Within the Hemophilia Treatment Center, the Physical Therapist plays an essential treatment role in meeting the specialized needs of individuals with hemophilia, a genetic disorder characterized by impaired blood clotting.

Their primary role is to address the musculoskeletal challenges associated with hemophilia and to optimize patients’ physical function while minimizing the risk of bleeding and joint damage. They assess patients’ joint health, design individualized treatment plans, and implement therapeutic interventions to enhance joint mobility, strength, and overall physical well-being.

Crucial aspects of the role are education and counseling on joint protection, pain management, and lifestyle modifications.

Work Interactions

The Physical Therapist reports to Dr. Craig Kessler regarding clinical matters and to  Lisa Jacobs regarding administrative matters.

Within the Hemophilia Treatment Center, the Physical Therapist’s work is integral to the holistic care approach for individuals with hemophilia. By focusing on musculoskeletal aspects, the physical therapist complements the expertise of hematologists, nurses, and other healthcare professionals within the team.

Regular communication and collaboration with hematologists allow the Physical Therapist to align interventions with the patient’s overall treatment plan, ensuring a comprehensive and cohesive approach to care. Their assessments and interventions directly influence the prevention of joint damage and bleeding episodes, contributing significantly to the long-term health and quality of life for individuals with hemophilia. This collaborative model ensures that the physical therapist’s insights into joint health and functional abilities are seamlessly integrated into the overall treatment strategy, fostering a patient-centered approach that addresses both the hematological and physical aspects of hemophilia management.

Through this inter professional collaboration, the Hemophilia Treatment Center can provide more effective and tailored care to meet the unique needs of each patient.

Requirements and Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Physical Therapy – preference for Master’s or Doctoral degree
• Licensed by the District of Columbia Department of Health

Preferred qualification

Experience in an inpatient or outpatient setting
