Platform Engineer, Office for Fiscal and Regulatory Analysis

Overall Responsibility:

This position will serve as a key member of AFPI’s Office for Fiscal and Regulatory Analysis (OFRA) team. The Platform Engineer will work directly with senior members of OFRA’s technical team to develop and maintain the software service platform powering a wide range of fiscal and regulatory analyses and tools. This position would be a good fit for those pursuing a career in cloud-based infrastructure management, server-side application development, and machine learning.

Department: Office for Fiscal and Regulatory Analysis

Responsibilities and Duties:

  • Develop server applications, APIs, local tools, and libraries to support data scientists and economists in their analysis;
  • Design, manage, and maintain cloud-based infrastructure and resources, particularly: compute, networking, storage, serverless functions, vector data storage and processing;
  • Manage IAM and ensure security best practices;
  • Design and maintain monitoring, logging, and CI/CD tools and pipelines;
  • Clearly champion AFPI’s servant leadership culture;
  • Operate with discretion in an environment that requires information security.

Consults with:

  • The rest of the OFRA team;
  • Other engineers and economists at AFPI;
  • Support staff;
  • Interns.

Type of Employment: Full-time

Qualifications:

  • Strong experience and familiarity with team-based software development and principles;
  • Solid programming ability in Python and preferably several other languages;
  • Deep expertise in managing resources within at least one major cloud platform;
  • Machine learning or statistics experience is a plus;
  • A deep quantitative integrity and respect for the scientific process;
  • A strong interest in pursuing interdisciplinary research;
  • Excellent attention to detail;
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and communication skills (both oral and written);
  • Ability to maintain productive, collaborative, and collegial relationships with staff and external stakeholders and uphold the public reputation of the organization;
  • An entrepreneurial mindset that seeks out new opportunities to grow and advance the mission of AFPI.
