School/College/Division Description | The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, Division of Finance and Administrative Affairs is currently seeking to fill a Police Sergeant position for the University of Wisconsin Milwaukee Police Department. UWM, a doctoral/research intensive university, is Wisconsin’s premier public urban university and offers a comprehensive liberal arts and professional education at the undergraduate and graduate levels. Job Summary | Applicants for this position must be an employee of the UW Milwaukee Police Department. This position serves as a law enforcement supervisor with administrative responsibilities at the University of Wisconsin—Milwaukee (UWM). The UWM Police Department provides law enforcement and protective services to the UW-Milwaukee campus on a 24 hour a day, 7 days a week and 365 days per year. This is a supervisory position with some administrative responsibilities. It requires the application of personnel management and organizational principles and specialized knowledge in the area of law enforcement methods, systems and procedures. The incumbent is required to interpret and apply a thorough knowledge of federal, state, university, local laws and regulations that apply to situations involving numerous aspects of law enforcement. The incumbent may also perform the same task as the police officers supervised, as required by directive or operational need. Job duties are governed by established statutes, rules, regulations, policies and procedures. Functioning under the general supervision of the Operations Lieutenant, the Police Sergeant’s principal duties are to supervise assigned personnel; including, but not limited to, law enforcement officers, security officers, law enforcement dispatcher, and is responsible for ensuring that departmental activities are performed efficiently. Activities are reviewed for adequacy of professional judgment, compliance with rules and regulations, policy and procedures, and achievement of results consistent with the department’s goals and objectives. The incumbent performs complex operations with considerable latitude for independent actions and decisions. In the absence of executive command personnel, the Police Sergeant has delegated authority to take immediate decisive action during emergencies and make executive command level decisions until such time as sworn administrative personnel can return to duty. Errors in judgment or irresponsible behavior by the incumbent or other staff members may have a major impact on the safety and civil rights of the offenders, university population and fellow officers. |
