Org. Setting and Reporting
The Department of Political and Peacebuilding Affairs (DPPA) focuses primarily on five action areas in international peace and security, ensuring sound analysis and early warning, preventing conflict and engaging in peacemaking, managing political crises and violent conflicts, sustaining peace, and enhancing partnerships. The Department’s mandate is to prevent and resolve conflict through inclusive political solutions. This position is located in the Office of the Assistant Secretary-General for Peacebuilding Support Office (PBSO). The Policy and Coordination Officer will be supporting PBSO’s efforts to operationalize the Peacebuilding Impact Hub. The focus of this job is the establishment, implementation, and monitoring and evaluation of the Peacebuilding Impact Hub, its operations and other related activities. The Policy and Coordination Officer works under the direct supervision of the Senior Programme Officer (Impact Hub Leader) and overall supervision of the Director and Deputy Head of PBSO/DPPA.
Responsibilities
Within delegated authority, the Political Affairs Officer will be responsible for the following duties:
- Gathers, selects and analyses information contained in communications and publications received from different sources, including the press.
- Maintains up-to-date knowledge of events relating to political issues, in policy developments general. and in particular as they affect the thematic mandates for which the staff member is responsible for related to peacebuilding, including institutional developments.
- Keeps abreast of latest trends and developments in the area of assignment and provides inputs on issues to senior officials and colleagues in missions and elsewhere in the Secretariat.
- Monitors national and regional level political developments and provides advice to field mission/UN agencies active on the ground.
- Provides technical and substantive back up in the implementation of mandates of the office, branch or unit.
- Maintains contacts with other sectors of the UN, other international organizations and governments on coordination and policy matters with a focus on peacebuilding issues.
- Monitors actions taken by intergovernmental groups, UN organisations, government and non-governmental organizations related to peacebuilding efforts.
- Selects, classifies and stores in computerised databases information relating to peacebuilding trends, potential disputes and conflicts involving assigned countries or region.
- Participates in fact-finding and other missions to countries within assigned area of responsibility.
- Participates in provision of secretariat services to Security Council, General Assembly, subsidiary organizations, negotiating bodies, conferences, meetings, and /or special missions.
- Prepares meetings of the SG/DSG/USG DPPA, ASG and Deputy Head PBSO with officials from countries and entities engaging with the Peacebuilding Impact Hub.
- Collects and analyzes data to identify trends or patterns and provide insights through graphs, charts, tables and reports using data visualization methods to enable data-driven planning, decision-making, presentation and reporting.

Education
- Advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in political science, international relations, international economics, law, public administration or other related is required. A first-level university degree in combination with qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.
Work Experience
- A minimum of five years of progressively responsible experience in international relations, political science, or conflict resolution is required. A minimum of three years of experience in the area of peacebuilding is required. Experience working in conflict-affected countries is required. Experience in working with international, multilateral financial institutions (such as the World Bank, Africa Development Bank, Islamic Development Bank or equivalent institutions) is desirable. Experience in networking with academic institutions, research organizations and think tanks in the area of international peace and security is desirable.
Languages
- English and French are the two the working languages of the United Nations. For this position fluency in English (both oral and written) is required; fluency in French is desirable. Knowledge of another UN official language is an advantage.
