Position description
Do you want to play your part in changing transport’s climate impact and continued reliance on fossil fuels? Transport & Environment (T&E) is looking for a talented and dynamic policy manager to join the team to work on addressing aviation’s climate impact through effective pricing and channelling investments towards the right alternatives. The programme is part of a wider strategy to end transport’s reliance on kerosene in aviation and promoting industrial and sustainable finance policies to deploy the right technologies to minimise the environmental impact of the sector.
Aviation is a challenging sector to decarbonise. We need this position to support linking our technical and political work at the EU and national level to effectively price aviation emissions and send the right price signals to deploy clean technologies for the sector. We need convincing and compelling economic, political and legal analysis, reports and presentations to convert complex information into advocacy and media friendly material. Finally, we need to convince European lawmakers to set ambitious but achievable goals to drive the sector from being the fastest growing climate problem to one of sustainability.
The role will involve:
- Form T&E’s advocacy strategy towards EU and national regulators, politicians and media on carbon pricing and industrial policy for aviation;
- Link advocacy strategy with sustainable finance work in collaboration with other T&E teams;
- Contributing to T&E’s aviation strategy, identifying and working on key EU and national regulations to accelerate carbon pricing (aviation EU ETS and other pricing tools) and investment in clean technologies. This includes among others researching, analysing and communicating effectively relevant technical, economic and legal information to relevant audiences;
- Building and maintaining good contact with policy-makers and our members working in this field;
- Leading the work on building formal and informal coalitions with key aviation industry players;
- Representing T&E at external alliances and forums;
- Identifying, commissioning and delivering impactful research tailored to the needs of the EU and national policy campaigns;
- Supporting the overall work of the aviation team.
The successful candidate should meet the following criteria:
- Five to seven years of relevant experience in either the aviation sector, energy sector, EU or government advocacy, preferably on economic topics. With relevant experiences we can consider the candidacy with shorter work experience;
- The confidence to think and act with initiative, to engage and influence policy-makers of different stripes, industry representatives and other stakeholders at the highest level;
- The ability and motivation to learn technical, economic and legal information, to independently develop new political, economic or legal arguments and evidence and use them to convince key stakeholders;
- Excellent coordination skills, with an ability to engage with, build and manage multi-stakeholder coalitions;
- Good writing, communication and presentation skills;
- Project management skills including strong interpersonal and team-working skills, and a willingness to develop a network in the aviation sector;
- Ability to deliver to tight deadlines; eager to learn, with a positive and optimistic attitude when faced with challenges;
- Having an academic background in economics is a plus.
This position is advertised as a permanent, full-time position based in Brussels. While we offer a flexible working environment, there is an expectation that there are at least two days per week spent in the office.
The start date would be as soon as possible.
The salary package depends on experience. We are an equal opportunities employer and offer competitive salary and benefits.
The deadline for applications is the 7th of June.
