Duties and Responsibilities

The duration of the internship is for six (6) months. The internship is UNPAID and may be either full-time or part-time. It should be noted that full-time internship working hours are 35 hours per week, while part-time internship working hours are 20 hours per week. The internship will be undertaken either remotely outside the duty station or in a hybrid working arrangement at the UN Premise, New York, United States.

The Peacebuilding Support Office would like to recruit an intern to support the work of its Branches.

Tasks will include: 1) Support PBSO’s work aimed at advancing the Secretary-General agenda on peacebuilding and sustaining peace and the Youth, Peace and Security agenda, including through background research, data analysis, inputs to documents, and the provision of meeting summaries. 2) Support the branches through the preparation of background and analytical material related to peacebuilding, including in support to internal and external engagements of the Assistant Secretary general for Peacebuilding and other senior officials.

3) Participate in UN mechanisms and coordination platforms to ensure integrated and coherent system approach to peacebuilding; 5) Participate and supportss relevant meetings of the Peacebuilding Commission as well as supports work related to the management of the Peacebuilding Fund when needed; 6) Assist in the coordination, management, outreach efforts and organizing of the Annual UN-Civil Society Organizations Dialogue; 7) Perform other related duties as required.

Qualifications/special skills

To qualify for an internship with the United Nations, applicants must meet one of the following conditions: Applicants must meet one of the following requirements: (a) be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); (b) be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum Bachelor’s level or equivalent); or (c) have graduated with a university degree (as defined above) and, if selected, must commence the internship within one year period of graduation.

– Must be computer literate in standard software applications, including Excel (advanced knowledge desirable).

– Have a demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter. – Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views. 1. Applicants to the UN Internship Programme are not required to have professional work experience.

However, a field of study that is closely related to the type of internship that you are applying for is required.

• Have you completed a UN Internship before? If yes, please include the UN entity as well as concrete dates. 2. Applicants must be a student in the final year of the first university degree programme ( bachelor or equivalent). Master’s or Ph.D. Programme or equivalent, or have completed a Bachelor’s, Master’s or PH.D.

Languages

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat.

Fluency in spoken and written English is required for the internship. Knowledge of an additional UN language is an asset. Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian and Spanish are the official languages of the United Nations Secretariat.

Costs and arrangements for travel, visas, accommodation and living expenses are the responsibility of interns or their sponsoring institutions.

Interns who are not citizens or permanent residents of the country where the internship is undertaken, may be required to obtain the appropriate visa and work/employment authorization. Successful candidates should discuss their specific visa requirements before accepting the internship offer.
