Org. Setting and Reporting
This position is located in the Strategic Force Generation and Capability Planning Cell (SFGCPC) in the Policy, Evaluation and Training Division (DPET) within the Department of Peace Operations (DPO). The Political Affairs Officer reports to the Programme Management Officer in the SFGCPC. The incumbent supports the implementation of the main objectives and workstreams of the SFGCPC. The Policy, Evaluation and Training Division (DPET) is mandated to develop and disseminate the policy and doctrine guiding the work of Peacekeeping Operations. In addition, the division has the responsibility to evaluate, at the request of the heads of the departments, how those policies are being applied, gather lessons learned and best practices, and use that information to guide the development, coordination and delivery of standardized training, so as to complete the learning cycle. DPET is also responsible for developing and maintaining strategic cooperation with various UN and external partners.
Responsibilities
Within delegated authority, the Political Affairs Officer will be responsible for the following duties: • Gathers, selects and analyses information contained in communications and publications received from different sources, including the press. • Maintains up-to-date knowledge of events relating to peacekeeping issues, in general, and in particular as they affect the countries and thematic mandates for which the staff member is responsible. • Keeps abreast of latest trends and developments in strategic force generation and provides inputs on issues to senior officials and colleagues in the Secretariat. • Provides technical and substantive back up in the implementation of mandates of the office, branch or unit. • Maintains contacts with other sectors of the UN, other international organizations and governments on coordination and policy matters. • Monitors actions taken by intergovernmental groups, UN organisations, government and non-governmental organizations. • Selects, classifies and stores in computerised databases information relating to troop- and police-contributing countries. • Participates in assessment and advisory visits and other missions to countries within assigned area of responsibility. • Supports organization of large strategic force generation events • Participates in provision of secretariat services to Security Council, General Assembly, subsidiary organizations, negotiating bodies, conferences, meetings, and /or special missions. • Prepares meetings of the SG/DSG/USG with officials from countries under the Organization’s purview. • Performs other related duties as required.

Education
Advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in political science, international relations, international economics, law, public administration or other related. A first-level university degree in combination with two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.

Work Experience
A minimum of five years of progressively responsible experience in political science, international relations, security, development management, conflict resolution or related area is required. Experience drafting various products including presentations and remarks for headquarters senior leadership is required. Experience in inter-departmental coordination at headquarters is required. Experience in organizing large strategic force generation events is required. Experience in supporting Member State negotiations at headquarters is desirable. Experience designing and managing databases and dashboards is desirable.
Languages
English and French are the working languages of the UN Secretariat. For this position advertised, fluency in English (both oral and written) is required. Knowledge of French is desirable. Knowledge of another UN official language is an advantage.

The position advertised is funded through Extra-budgetary funds. Appointment against this position is for an initial period of one year. Staff members are subject to the authority of the Secretary-General and to assignment by him or her.
