The Office of the United Nations’ Special Coordinator for the Middle East Peace Process (UNSCO) represents the Secretary-General and leads the UN system in all political and diplomatic efforts related to the peace process, including in the Middle East Quartet. UNSCO also coordinates the humanitarian and development work of UN agencies and programmes in the occupied Palestinian territory, in support of the Palestinian Authority and the Palestinian people.
UN Secretary-General António Guterres is deeply committed to peace in the Middle East. The UN works for the creation of an independent State of Palestine living side-by-side in peace with the State of Israel, and a just, lasting and comprehensive resolution to the Arab Israeli conflict, in accordance with relevant UN resolutions and international law.
UNSCO’s Regional Affairs Unit advises the Special Coordinator and the Deputy Special Coordinator on political and diplomatic issues related to the Arab Israeli conflict and the Middle East peace process, including in his capacity of the UN envoy to the Middle East Quartet. The RAU develops UNSCO’s relationship with the parties, as well as regional and international partners, facilitating dialogue and negotiations and the implementation of agreements, and briefing relevant actors on developments. RAU is responsible for producing timely and comprehensive analyses of political developments and trends, providing them as guidance to the UN system as it relates to the Middle East peace process. The Unit also provides regular inputs for Security Council briefings, public statements and briefings by the Secretary-General and the Special Coordinator – including in their roles in the Middle East Quartet — as well as information and analysis for senior decision-makers in the UN system. Additionally, the unit provides technical assistance for the organization of free, fair and transparent Palestinian elections.
DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
Under the direct supervision of the Chief of the Regional Affairs Unit in Jerusalem, the Political Affairs Specialist would enable the development of partnerships with key/emerging local political actors, gathering information and providing analysis and reporting on the evolving political and security dynamics and broader developments in post-conflict Gaza.
Key duties and accountabilities include:
