Political and Conflict Researcher – Sudan (Consultancy)

Local Position in Nairobi, Kenya, with potential for regional travel

The Carter Center is seeking a highly qualified, locally based in Nairobi, Political and Conflict Researcher to join its Sudan International Observation Mission team. This consultancy will provide research, analysis, stakeholder engagement, and drafting support for The Carter Center’s initiatives. The ideal candidate will have an outstanding knowledge and understanding of the Sudanese context, be fluent in Arabic and English, and be already based in Nairobi. This role may require travel in the region on an as-needed basis.

This is a three-month consultancy, with the possibility of renewal based on performance and program needs. Recruitment is ongoing, and the position will remain open until filled. However, candidates are encouraged to apply early, as applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis, and the position may be filled before the deadline of January 19, 2025.

The Political and Conflict Researcher will work under the overall supervision of the Mission Director, will report directly to the International Political and Conflict Analyst, and will work in collaboration with other designated staff of the field office.

The Political and Conflict Researcher will assist the mission/the team in identifying key issues to monitor and liaise with different parties, NGOs, and other Sudanese stakeholders in Sudan or across the region; within limits of delegated authority, be responsible for the following:

  • Research and Analysis:

    • Conduct in-depth research on Sudan’s political, social, and conflict dynamics;
    • Draft research briefs, concept notes, reports, and other programmatic documents; and
    • Analyze data and trends to inform strategic decision-making and programming.
  • Stakeholder Engagement:

    • Identify and liaise with key Sudanese and regional stakeholders, including civil society organizations, political actors, and experts;
    • Provide recommendations on strategic partnerships and opportunities for collaboration; and
    • Participate in meetings with stakeholders as requested.
  • Programmatic and Administrative Support:

    • Assist in developing strategies, programs, and initiatives related to Sudan.
    • Coordinate meetings, workshops, and consultations, ensuring effective documentation and follow-up.
  • General Duties:

    • Provide oral and written translation between Arabic and English as required.
    • Perform other tasks as needed to support the program’s objectives and activities.
    • This position requires in-person attendance to an office during regular working hours throughout the week.

Qualifications:

  1. Education:

    • Bachelor’s degree in political science, international relations, conflict studies, or a related field. A master’s degree will be an advantage.
  2. Experience:

    • Minimum of 3 years of experience in political research, conflict analysis, or a similar role.
    • Demonstrated experience working on Sudanese political and conflict issues.
  3. Skills and Attributes:

    • Full fluency in Arabic and English (written and spoken).
    • Strong research, analytical, and writing skills.
    • Proven ability to synthesize complex information and draft clear, concise documents.
    • Proficiency in computer applications, including Microsoft Office Suite.
    • Excellent organizational and time management skills.
    • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
    • Strong interpersonal skills, with a demonstrated ability to engage with diverse stakeholders.
    • Deep understanding of Sudanese politics, society, and culture.
    • Critical thinking and objectivity, with a commitment to impartiality.
