The Department of Radiation Oncology at the University of Miami, Miller School of Medicine, has an exciting opportunity for a Postdoctoral Associate. The Post Doctoral Associate will study the role of reactive oxygen and reactive nitrosative species in cell and mouse models of prostate cancer.  The individual hired must be able to function independently, to design and perform routine and complex laboratory experiments, to present results at scientific meetings, and to prepare manuscripts for publication in refereed journals.

The duties and responsibilities for this position may include, but are not limited to:

  • Demonstrate familiarity with the areas of research being pursued in the Rai lab and ability to think creatively in these areas. Some representative publications:

    Thioredoxin-1 protects against androgen receptor-induced redox vulnerability in castration-resistant prostate cancer. Nature Communications, Oct 31;8(1):1204. doi: 10.1038/s41467-017-01269-x. The existence of MTH1-independent 8-oxodGTPase activity in cancer cells as a compensatory mechanism against on-target effects of MTH1 inhibitors. Molecular Cancer Therapeutics 19(2):432-446. doi: 10.1158/1535-7163.MCT-19-0437.

  • Work relatively independently under the mentorship of Dr. Rai to contribute to the basic research of the lab

    Perform routine and complex laboratory experiments, including the planning and conducting of projects involving molecular / cell biology and mouse tumor models with oversight from the PI

  • Carry out experimental protocols with appropriate technical rigor and accuracy, interpret experimental data, carry out required statistical analysis, and maintain accurate records

    Provide training and mentoring to graduate students as well as provide technical assistance to lab members.

  • Stay informed by reading technical journal and publications and search literature for references to technical problems

  • Assist in the preparation of data and figures for publication in refereed journals and grant applications

  • Present data in laboratory meetings and scientific meetings

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Ph.D. or other doctoral degree in biochemistry, molecular biology, molecular genetics, cell biology, cancer biology or a related life science field with a strong publication record.
  • Candidates must have strong analytical and critical skills; the ability to recognize, analyze, and solve a variety of problems; exercise integrity and rigor in scientific research; work efficiently and collegially in a team setting; have excellent verbal and written communication skills; and an adaptable attitude.
  • A short but specific statement of interest in the Rai lab and how the candidate can contribute to the Rai lab’s research program should be included.
  • Prior experience in cancer , competence with basic molecular biology and cell biology techniques (including cell culture), and hands-on expertise with mouse models is required.
  • Prior experience in cancer models of obesity and/or expertise in metabolomics/lipidomics is strongly preferred.
  • Familiarity with bioinformatics and transcriptomics is desirable. Candidates who are already reside in the country are preferred.
