Soil Ecology Lab, University of Nevada Reno
tendersglobal.net
The Soil Ecology Lab in the Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Science at the University of Nevada in Reno, NV anticipates hiring one scientist to study soil carbon cycle responses to disturbance and restoration of meadow ecosystems in the California Sierra Nevada mountains. Montane meadows are biogeochemically unique ecosystems that contribute disproportionately to regional carbon budgets. We seek applicants trained in soil biogeochemistry, terrestrial ecosystem ecology, or related fields, with experience working in grassland, forest, or wetland ecosystems. The position requires engagement with several regional NGOs and agencies.
This position will continue and, crucially, expand upon existing research conducted by the Lab into carbon dynamics in Sierra Nevada meadows. The successful applicant will have several opportunities available including engaging with extant projects and datasets and developing new research directions that complement and enhance funded research projects. These projects involve both basic and applied science questions. The position involves a mix of field, laboratory, and desk work, including activities such as soil sampling, soil greenhouse gas sample collection, gas chromatography, elemental analysis, soil carbon fractionation, and use of carbon isotopes. The successful applicant will be responsible for analyzing and interpreting data, giving scientific presentations to academic and nonacademic audiences, contributing to or leading scientific manuscripts, and communicating effectively with stakeholders and the public. Thus, the applicant should have some experience with data analysis and a sufficient background in soil biogeochemistry or ecosystem ecology to interpret such analyses.
Minimum Qualifications:
- M.S. or Ph.D. in biogeochemistry, biology, ecology, forestry, natural resources, or a related field.
- R or Python programming experience
- Experience with field and laboratory methods commonly used in soil carbon research.
- Strong organization skills
- Demonstrated strong written and verbal communication skills
- Valid driver’s license
- Ability to lift and carry 40 pounds.
- Interest in applied research to inform policy and practice
Desired Qualifications:
- Project management or team leadership experience
- Experience with advanced data analysis, machine learning, and scientific computing
- Familiarity with GIS
- Experience with plant identification
Schedule/Travel Requirements:
- Most field sites are within a 2 hour drive from Reno, NV; infrequent overnights may occur
- Field work can involve long days under challenging conditions or adverse weather
- Flexible hours many days, work-from-home is possible when tasks allow
- Weekly project meetings
- Quarterly meetings with project partners
- Conference participation
The position is for multiple years. The salary will be commensurate with experience and degree obtained. Position comes with university benefits package. Applications will be reviewed upon receipt and will continue to be evaluated until the position is filled.
