The Soil Ecology Lab in the Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Science at the University of Nevada in Reno, NV anticipates hiring one scientist to study soil carbon cycle responses to disturbance and restoration of meadow ecosystems in the California Sierra Nevada mountains. Montane meadows are biogeochemically unique ecosystems that contribute disproportionately to regional carbon budgets. We seek applicants trained in soil biogeochemistry, terrestrial ecosystem ecology, or related fields, with experience working in grassland, forest, or wetland ecosystems. The position requires engagement with several regional NGOs and agencies.
This position will continue and, crucially, expand upon existing research conducted by the Lab into carbon dynamics in Sierra Nevada meadows. The successful applicant will have several opportunities available including engaging with extant projects and datasets and developing new research directions that complement and enhance funded research projects. These projects involve both basic and applied science questions. The position involves a mix of field, laboratory, and desk work, including activities such as soil sampling, soil greenhouse gas sample collection, gas chromatography, elemental analysis, soil carbon fractionation, and use of carbon isotopes. The successful applicant will be responsible for analyzing and interpreting data, giving scientific presentations to academic and nonacademic audiences, contributing to or leading scientific manuscripts, and communicating effectively with stakeholders and the public. Thus, the applicant should have some experience with data analysis and a sufficient background in soil biogeochemistry or ecosystem ecology to interpret such analyses.
