The University of Western Australia (UWA) is ranked among the top 100 universities in the world and a member of the prestigious Australian Group of Eight research intensive universities. With a strong research track record, vibrant campus and working environments, supported by the freedom to innovate and inspire, there is no better time to join Western Australia’s top university.
About the team
This position is within the ARC Discovery Project DP240101808 “Unlocking new generation physical modelling with realistic soil response”.
The position will be part of the Centre for Offshore Foundation Systems (COFS), within the Oceans Graduate School (OGS). The COFS, established in 1987 is a world leading research centre in offshore geotechnics, at the fore front of research in offshore renewables. The OGS is home to a critical mass of researchers spanning ocean engineering, oceanography and marine science. In addition to COFS, the OGS hosts Marine Energy Research Australia, the ARC Research Hub for transforming Energy Infrastructure through Digital Engineering and Woodside’s FutureLab collaboration network. OGS researchers conduct world-leading research to provide ocean solutions in relation to the marine environment and resources, engineering and technology.
About the opportunity
To work with the Chief Investigators (CIs) at UWA and the Partner Investigators (PIs) University of California Davies and Fugro to undertake the research defined in the ARC Discovery project.
As the appointee you will, under direction of the UWA supervisors and in collaboration with the PIs, participate in and coordinate work related to the development of soil samples exhibiting realistic in-situ properties and mechanical characteristics for use in physical modelling. The work will specifically focus on developing soil sample reconstitution techniques to model the realistic response of carbonate and cemented sediments found in Australia to be able to model the next generation of foundations for offshore renewable energy developments. This will involve (i) characterising at micro and macro levels in-situ carbonate sediments, (ii) understand and simulate their mechanical response, (iii) developing new soil sample reconstitution techniques and (iv) tests and validate samples reconstituted at soil elements levels and in the geotechnical centrifuge at the UWA National Geotechnical Centrifuge Facility, by modelling the response of foundations for offshore renewables such as wind turbines. The successful candidate will be a geotechnical engineer with demonstrated experimental skills, and a solid background in soils mechanics. Candidates with additional knowledge in the biochemical processes taking place in natural soils are strongly encouraged to apply.
