We are seeking applicants for a 2-year Post Doc in the field of land use and land cover mapping and modelling at the Department of Environmental Science (ENVS) at Aarhus University, Roskilde, Denmark working with GIS and spatial modelling in relation to e.g. land use and land cover change mapping and mapping and assessment of impacts on ecosystem services and biodiversity.

The post doc will take part in EU and nationally funded research and advisory projects related to land use and land cover change (LULC) mapping and ecosystem service assessment.
This includes development of novel methodologies for LULC change mapping and ecosystem service assessment as well as spatial modelling and integration of various spatial data sources, such as agricultural registers (LPIS data), categorical datasets and remotely sensed data (e.g. LiDAR, aerial imagery and satellite imagery).

The ideal candidate should hold a PhD in within geography, geographical information science or similar and have conducted and published research within land use and land cover mapping, GIS and spatial modelling.

The Department of Environmental Science

The Department of Environmental Science is an interdisciplinary department under the Faculty of Science & Technology at Aarhus University. The expertise ranges from physics, chemistry, microbiology and mathematical modelling to social science, geography, economics and policy analysis. Both basic and applied research is conducted related to some of the major challenges facing society, such as pollution and pollution control mechanisms, management of land, soil, water, air and biodiversity, protection of ecosystem services, climate change, and energy systems. Advisory services within these areas are offered to ministries and other stakeholders. Currently, about 150 staff and PhD-students are working at the department. Further information may be found at http://www.envs.au.dk/en/. The department is co-located at Risø Campus with part of Department of Bioscience in Roskilde 35 kilometres west of Copenhagen.

The Post Doc will be employed within the Section for Environmental Social Science and Geography at the Department of Environmental Science. The unit employs about 20 staff, focusing on the interlinkages between the environment and society from economics, political science, sociology, and geography perspectives. The strategic foci of the unit include environmental policy analysis, regulation and economic instruments, understanding of the preferences and behavior of economic actors and policy makers, land use and land cover mapping, spatially integrated modelling, and mapping, assessment and valuation of ecosystem services. Within these areas we carry out research, advisory services for policy makers, and some teaching. We are an international group, and our spoken work language is English, however tasks related to advisory work is mostly conducted in Danish.   

The candidate will also work in close collaboration with the department’s emission group, which is in charge of Denmark’s national greenhouse gas emission inventory. Here, collaboration will focus on the Land use, Land-Use Change and Forestry (LULUCF) sector and the candidate will contribute to public sector consultancy.
