Department of Urban and Rural Development

Department of Urban and Rural Development is a large department with five divisions: Agrarian History, Rural Development, Environmental Communication, Landscape Architecture and the Division of Political Science and Natural Resource Management, the latter including Sida’s helpdesk for environmental assessment and the Swedish Biodiversity Centre. The department also includes the Swedish Centre for Nature Interpretation. Topics on sustainable use of natural resources and landscapes are central to the department’s research and teaching. The department has about 180 employees.

The SLU Swedish Biodiversity Centre, (CBM) is a center for research and communication on conservation, restoration and sustainable use of biodiversity as a crucial issue for society. CBM is located at the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences, SLU in Uppsala.

Duties:

The work includes research to provide the basis for better conservation measures for medium-sized mammals in the Swedish road and railway network. Tasks:

  • To lead and conduct field studies of fauna conservation measures (e.g. with camera traps, tracking).
  • Analyse animal GPS tracking data (mainly existing data from other projects), wildlife roadkill statistics, camera trapping, snow tracking.
  • GIS analyses of, e.g., habitat, habitat selection and landscape connectivity.
  • Develop and evaluate methods for GIS-based landscape analysis.
  • Compilation and synthesis of literature.
  • Reporting of results and conclusions, mainly through conference presentations, technical reports and scientific articles.

The work (fieldwork, meetings, reporting, etc.) may be distributed geographically over the country. The work will be conducted in close collaboration with different actors in the infrastructure sector, primarily the Swedish Transport Administration but also other professionals within authorities, organizations and industry at national, local and regional level. The work also includes national and international research contacts. The postdoc will be part of the department’s research group on infrastructure ecology, and may involve research also outside of the above-mentioned tasks. The work is part of the research project “TRIEKOL Measures for small and medium-sized animals” funded by the Swedish Transport Administration starting in 2024.

Qualifications:
 The following qualifications are required:

  • PhD in ecology, preferably with a focus on vertebrates
  • Documented experience of planning and conducting field studies both as part of a team and indepentently
  • Good knowledge of handling and analysing ecological data
  • Good cooperation skills
  • Very good proficiency in English, both spoken and written, is a requirement
  • Driver’s license

The following qualifications are commendable:

  • Previous research in landscape ecology, population ecology and conservation ecology
  • Experience of working with applied issues and with implementation of research results
  • Good ecological knowledge of terrestrial mammals
  • Good ability to speak and write Swedish (to facilitate collaboration with practitioners)

Personal qualities are an important basis for the assessment. The position is intended for a junior researcher and we are primarily looking for persons with a doctoral degree completed <3 years ago, with an interest in developing research and a career in the subject of infrastructure ecology.
