Position Summary

Rice University’s Baker Institute for Public Policy invites applications for the Zwan Postdoctoral Associate. The successful candidate will join the Religion and Public Policy Program at the Baker Institute for Public Policy in the fall 2024 semester for a two-year position under the supervision of the Institute’s Chavanne Fellow in Religion and Public Policy. The postdoctoral associate will support the program’s research project on “religious belts,” regions of high religious belief, practice, and participation within nations.

In addition, the position will participate in programming and professional development within the Boniuk Institute for Religious Tolerance on campus and pursue independent research projects, including but not limited to publishing from their dissertation or other ongoing research. There are no teaching responsibilities associated with the position.

Ideal candidates will have prior experience in social science research on religious communities and cross-national study.

Hiring Salary: 60,000

Requirements

  • Doctoral degree in social sciences, religion or public policy
  • Skills
    • Advanced communication skills
  • Proficient in either quantitative or qualitative data analysis software (e.g., SPSS, STATA, R, NVivo, Atlas TI, etc.)
  • A record of research accomplishment
  • Ability to work well with others
  • Strong motivation to understand the impact of religious belts on nations and the world
  • Expertise in the study of religion, religion and social impacts, religion and politics, or religion in cross-national contexts.

Essential Functions

  • Support the research agenda of the Religion and Public Policy Program on the impact of religious belts
  • Conduct research on issues related to religion and public policy by conceptualizing and theorizing; creating and implementing qualitative and quantitative research designs; analyzing findings; and communicating results through publications
  • Develop grant proposals
  • Collaborate with relevant researchers and experts within the Baker Institute, Boniuk Institute as well as outside the university.
  • Performs all other duties as assigned

Additional Functions

  • Attend appropriate conferences
  • Work closely with Dr. Michael Emerson
  • Approximately 35% of the time work on own independent research agenda

Preferences

  • Proficiency in a language in addition to English
  • Project management of grant-funded research such as coordinating and conducting qualitative interviews, data management, or assisting with survey design and validation
  • Experience writing grant proposals
  • Experience in or knowledge of a region of the world other than North America
