A Postdoctoral Associate position is available in the laboratory of Dr. Nicolas Young in the Verna & Marrs McLean Department of Biochemistry & Molecular Pharmacology at Baylor College of Medicine.

Job Duties

  • Focuses on data analysis and bioinformatics of quantitative top-down proteomics approaches in chromatin and epigenetics as well as quantitative bottom up proteomics of enriched lysosomes in mouse models of aging and Alzheimer’s disease.
  • Involves understanding how multiple post-translational modifications on proteins function in concert, on single molecules, to regulate the genome.  This position is funded by a program project focused on Alzheimer’s Disease and Aging.
  • Leads research projects to better understand epigenetic mechanisms of the brain and the regulation and function of the lysosome. This includes in developmental, aging, and neurodegeneration contexts.
  • Develops and applies mass spectrometry and data analysis approaches to multiple related experimental platforms and assists graduate students and other postdoctoral associates with data analysis and bioinformatics.
  • Leads projects, designs experiments, and collaborates with other scientists to accomplish research goals.
  • Evaluates and analyzes top-down and bottom-up mass spectrometry data and develops computational approaches to analyze top-down data.
  • Interprets proteoform meaning, writes papers and contributes to grant writing.

Minimum Qualifications

  • MD or Ph.D. in Basic Science, Health Science, or a related field.
  • No experience required.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Applicants with backgrounds in: Proteomics, Chromatin Biology, Epigenetics, Neurodegeneration, Biochemistry, Bioinformatics, and Biostatistics are welcome to apply. Candidates that overlap several of these areas or are passionate about crossing these disciplines are particularly encouraged to apply.
  • You must have a Ph.D. from an accredited institution, an excellent publication record, efficient time management skills, and a strong work ethic.
  • You must have excellent scientific writing skills and be able to take a leading role in the writing and publication of diverse scientific articles addressing advances in methodology and functional and mechanistic inquiry.
  • Most importantly you must be passionate about solving unanswered questions in Eukaryotic biology by digging deeper into specific biochemical events using cutting edge approaches.
  • It is strongly preferred that you have experience analyzing omics datasets, experience in using/developing mass spectrometry methods and/or interpreting top-down and/or bottom up mass spectrometry data.
