Offer Description

The Department of Orthopaedics at The University of British Columbia (UBC) invites applications for a full-time Postdoctoral Fellow at the Hippy Lab at BC Children’s Hospital to facilitate research in the area of pediatric orthopaedic surgery.

This position is located within a health-care facility. Therefore, this position requires successful verification of full vaccination against Covid-19 provided prior to the start date, as required by the provincial health mandate.

The Hippy Lab is a global leader in the field of pediatric hip and trauma research, with the goal of improving hip health, mobility and quality of life for all children in British Columbia, nationally and globally through research, clinical care, education and advocacy. To that end, the Hippy Lab has established the Hippy Global Registry Program, with multiple established prospective registries: the Global Hip Dysplasia Registry (GHDR), the SCFE Longitudinal International Prospective (SLIP) Registry, and the Global Pediatric Orthopaedic Implant Safety & Efficacy Registry (Global POISE). We are aiming to expand the portfolio of the Hippy Global Registry Program to include two additional registries: The Rare Hip Conditions Registry (RHCR) and Global PedORTHO (a musculoskeletal trauma registry).

Reporting to the Head of the UBC Department of Orthopaedics, the successful candidate will be primarily responsible for leading the development of these two new registries (RHCR and Global PedORTHO), but will have the opportunity to be involved in the full range of research including development of grant proposals and study protocols through to authoring research publications and reports. Major duties include selecting relevant data variables required for various hip and trauma conditions in conjunction with global orthopaedic surgeons, allied healthcare professionals and researchers with subject matter expertise, and leading the development and building of REDCap databases. The PDF will lead completion of protocol development and the ethics approval process, coordinate participant recruitment with Hippy Lab Research Coordinators and Assistants, oversee data collection, conduct analyses, develop new studies and prepare studies for publication. The PDF will also be responsible for supervising, training and mentoring the research staff, co-operative education and medical students working with the Hippy Lab, as well as providing research mentorship and support to the surgical fellows and residents as needed.

The successful candidate will hold a doctorate degree in health, life or social science or related discipline. The successful candidate will have recent related experience and an understanding of orthopaedic issues in a pediatric population, qualitative and quantitative research methodologies and statistics. The successful candidate will have a high level of computer literacy, general knowledge of grant processes, ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing, ability to prioritize, delegate and work under pressure to meet deadlines, ability to work effectively independently and in a team, ability to analyze problems and devise effective, creative solutions, ability to maintain accuracy and attention to detail, and ability to provide supervision and communicate effectively with others.

The successful candidate will contribute to fostering an environment that promotes inclusivity and embodies values of respect, integrity, compassion, collaboration, and equity. Equity, diversity, inclusion, and justice are essential to academic excellence, as well as to fostering an inclusive community for voices that have been historically underrepresented or discouraged. Candidates who bring diverse perspectives and lived experiences are encouraged to apply as we strive to enhance diversity, inclusiveness, socio-cultural representation, and perspective of the Department/School.

The expected pay for this position is $65,000 per annum.
