Description of Work Unit The Civil and Environmental Engineering (CEE) Department at Colorado State University (CSU) is recognized both nationally andinternationally for its education, research, service and outreach programs, and is ranked in the top 40 of such programs in the USA. The CEE Department consists of 36 tenured and tenure-track faculty, 16 research scientists/scholars, 27 researchassociates, and 11 administrative professionals. Position Summary Work in the Socio-Physical and Hazard-Integrated Environment (SoPHIE) Research group lead by Dr. Hussam Mahmoud to develop a deep learning model for extracting building and vegetation features for communities before and after wildfire events. Lead and assist in conducting research in the areas of natural disasters, damage, losses, and recovery. Support the process of submitting external proposal for funding as it relates to current research being conducted as well as future projected research direction of the SoPHIE group. Writing journal articles and conference papers and presenting the work at conferences and meetings.
Required Job Qualifications
  • PhD degree Civil Engineering.
  • Experience with artificial intelligence and machine learning, deep learning, and quantum machine learning.
  • Knowledge of low-cost IoT devices for structural damage detection.
  • Ability and/or experience to lead individual research efforts as well as collaborate with others as part of a team.
  • Knowledge of finite element analysis
  • Knowledge of computational structural mechanics

  • Ability and/or experience to multi-task a number of research efforts simultaneously.
  • Ability and/or experience to publish articles as lead author and as a collaborator in peer reviewed literature.
  • Ability and/or experience to write successful proposals as part of a team.
  • Ability and/or experience to serve on thesis committees and help mentor students on an as-needed basis.

  • Utilize Google Earth’s imagery feature to obtain aerial images of different communities in the US and extract the geolocation footprint (latitude and longitude) of each structure.
  • Use a deep learning model to train satellite and aerial images to extract building footprints and external building features.
  • Use a deep learning model to extract high resolution vegetation data in communities. The vegetation and landscape data will be characterized based on 1) type of vegetation, 2) geospatial location, 3) density and height.
  • Obtain building and vegetation data before and after a wildfire event or other natural disasters.
