The Center for Citizenship and Constitutional Government (CCCG) at the University of Notre Dame invites applications for a Postdoctoral Fellow in Constitutional Studies. The position offers the opportunity to join a vibrant community with a strong record of teaching, programming, and publication and that includes faculty, visitors, professional staff, graduate students, and undergraduates. This position is open to applicants who have recently earned a Ph.D. or J.D. in constitutional studies, history, law, political science, political theory or related disciplines and fields. Command of the relevant principles, history, and developments in American constitutionalism is expected, as are an ambitious research agenda and exceptional written and verbal communication skills.

The mission of the Center is to cultivate thoughtful and educated citizens by supporting scholarship and education concerning the ideas and institutions of constitutional government. The Center includes a thriving and growing undergraduate minor with more than 175 students, a Ph.D. program training graduate students in constitutionalism, sponsored research by Notre Dame faculty and visiting fellows, collaborative partnerships across the University that bring the very best programming and publications to bear, and an annual program of lectures, debates, and conferences that has become noted at Notre Dame for its substance, its engagement, and its addressing of major current topics

Post-Doctoral Teaching at the CCCG
The successful candidate will serve as a valuable contributor to the teaching, programming, and publication mission of the CCCG and teach one course per semester. Teaching assignments will include either of the two gateway courses for the Center’s Constitutional Studies minor, and a second course (in constitutional studies, constitutional history, political theory, law, or a related field), to be determined by enrollment needs and/or the expertise of the candidate. Additionally, the Center offers a series of weekend colloquia and other special programming annually for its graduate and undergraduate student communities, including for the Tocqueville Fellows, a distinctive program for advanced undergraduates. The Center’s postdoctoral scholar will be expected to direct one or more colloquia during their appointment.

Post-Doctoral Research at the CCCG
The Center is a dynamic research environment and a venue for continuing conversations among a range of disciplines and fields. The successful candidate is expected to contribute to the CCCG’s research profile through their participation in the research activities of the Center as well as in the production of their own research on a range of topics and projects that align with the mission of the CCCG.

Additional Duties and Responsibilities
During their appointment, the CCCG postdoctoral scholar is expected to engage the CCCG community faculty and students and should possess the skills and talents to engage with the Center’s external audiences, including benefactors and the general public, when participating in the CCCG’s events and programming. This position may also accrue limited operational duties during periods of significant programming.

Qualifications:

  • A PhD in an appropriate field (constitutional studies, political theory, constitutional history, law, political science, etc.) or a JD. Advanced ABD graduate students may apply, but awards are contingent on their having completed the PhD before beginning the fellowship.
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills.
  • Exceptional communication (written and oral) and project management skills.
  • An understanding of the Catholic mission of the University and a dedication to its fulfillment.
  • Success teaching courses that align with the subjects and mission of the CCCG.
  • Success working with a range of faculty, external partners, and benefactors.
  • High level of attention to detail, ethical values, and initiative to work with a range of staff to achieve program and project goals.
  • An ability to develop creative seminars and colloquia for a dynamic intellectual community.
  • An exceptional capacity for collaborative research on topics and projects focused on American constitutionalism, political philosophy, and/or law.
