The Opportunity

The Monash Business School is structured into seven discipline-based departments (Accounting, Banking and Finance, Business Law and Taxation, Econometrics and Business Statistics, Economics and Management and Marketing) along with the specialist Leadership and Executive Education unit and several interdisciplinary research centres and labs focused on areas such as behavioural economics, development economics, employment and work, finance, global business, and retail studies. Impact Labs is a new organisational unit within the Monash Business School comprising several dynamic interdisciplinary research labs that leverage research synergies across the Business School and the wider University for collaborative and impactful research with external partners.

Founded in 2018, SoDa Laboratories was Monash Business School’s first Impact Lab. SoDa Labs exists to discover social science insights from alternative data.  SoDa Labs couples a large appetite for rapidly emerging sources of new data with a pan-empirical toolset that ranges from causal empirical methodologies to the latest data science and machine learning approaches. Research outputs from the lab are published in high quality outlets across both empirical social science (Economics, Econometrics) and machine learning (applied and core conferences and journals).  SoDa Labs is also home to the Monash IP Observatory and an expanding range of empirical and AI based applications including Forum Brain AI, SETU Explorer, and the Feedback Distillery. As such, SoDa Labs makes a significant contribution to Monash University’s Impact 2030 strategic research goals, particularly in relation to the global challenge of geopolitical security.
