Offer Description

Do you want to contribute to top quality medical research?

We are looking for a postdoctoral candidate that will work on the nanoscale bioparticle characterization.

The project will be performed at the Cell Signalling, Immunity and Nanoimaging (CSI:Nano) Lab in SciLifeLab at Karolinska Institute  led by Asst. Prof. Erdinc Sezgin.

SciLifeLab and KI are excellent places to carry out basic biomedical research with clinical potential. Our lab is in the intersection of biology, chemistry, physics and engineering, aiming to reveal the molecular codes of cellular physiology and diseases. The candidate will greatly benefit from this interdisciplinary environment and unique infrastructure.

This position is for 2 years full-time employment with a potential 2-year prolongation.

Application Deadline: 1 April 2024

Start Date: Fall 2024 (to be discussed)

Your mission

The postdoctoral fellow will further develop single particle profiling technology recently published by our lab (Sych et al, Nature Biotechnology, 2023).

The project involves:

  • applying advanced imaging tools (e.g., spectral imaging, fluctuation spectroscopy)
  • development of software and data analysis tools to characterize multiparametric datasets (e.g., for spectral unmixing)
  • handling blood and plasma
  • isolation and characterization of lipoproteins, lipid nanoparticles, exosomes and viruses
  • work in close collaboration with the other CSI:Nano lab members as well as other labs at SciLifeLab and KI

Your profile

To be eligible for employment as a postdoctor a doctoral degree or a foreign degree deemed to be equivalent to a doctoral degree is required. This eligibility requirement must be fulfilled at the latest at the time of the employment decision. It is considered as an advantage if you have completed your doctoral degree within the last three years, if there are special reasons, your degree may have been completed earlier.

Essential:

  • BSc in life or natural sciences (biology, molecular biology, physics, chemistry or similar)
  • PhD in areas: biophysics, biochemistry, metabolism, biomedicine
  • Strong interest in biomedical research
  • Strong expertise in biophysics and membrane biology
  • Strong expertise in advanced imaging technologies (spectral imaging, FCS, FLIM)
  • Strong expertise in image analysis
  • Proficiency in basic cell and molecular biology techniques
  • Independent working skills, teamwork spirit and willingness to help PhD/master students
  • Proficiency in scientific programming (e.g., Python)

What do we offer?

CSI:Nano Lab members come from international and interdisciplinary backgrounds, such as physics, chemistry, biomedicine, molecular biology and engineering. Our working language is English. In the lab, we advocate for diversity, equity and inclusion; promote open science and data sharing; encourage lab members to attend conferences; and foster healthy feedback culture. Moreover, the supervisor has open-door policy for meetings and brainstorming.

CSI:Nano Lab gives the fellows the opportunity to develop and/or apply state-of-the-art imaging methodologies to solve biological mysteries. Necessary training on the advanced bioimaging technologies will be given to the fellows. CSI:Nano Lab gives the candidates opportunity to become fully independent researchers in interdisciplinary science within years.
