Do you want to contribute to top quality medical research?
The Department of Microbiology, Tumor and Cell Biology (MTC) at Karolinska Institutet conducts research and teaching within immunology, infection biology, cell biology and cancer. MTC have about 40 research groups and our key words are multidisciplinary, bridging, national and international collaborations.
The Pelechano laboratory is located at the Science for Life Laboratory (SciLifeLab, http://www.scilifelab.se/ ) in the Karolinska Institute campus. SciLifeLab is equiped with state-of-the-art instrumentation and core facilities, and is home to one of the largest sequencing cluster in Europe.
Our group combines experimental and computational work, and aims to develop and apply novel genome-wide techniques to address fundamental biological questions with medical implications. We are especially interested in how subtle variations in gene expression can lead to differential cellular phenotypes and are passionate about RNA biology (http://pelechanolab.com/ ). You will have the opportunity to work in a highly interdisciplinary and international environment and combine the development of state-of-the art genome-wide approaches with the molecular dissection of fundamental biological problems.
Are you interested in unravelling the eukaryotic post-transcriptional regulatory code? Would you like to combine the use of cutting-edge genome-wide technologies with synthetic biology and machine learning to study RNA life? Come and join us at SciLifeLab!
Your mission
The available postdoctoral position concerns developing and applying novel genomic approaches to study eukaryotic gene expression at an unprecedented scale combining experimental and computational approaches.
The candidate will work in the context of a recently awarded ERC synergy project (EPIC – Unravelling the eukaryotic post-transcriptional regulatory code) in collaboration with the labs of Prof. Kevin Verstrepen (Leuven) and Prof. Julien Gagneur (Munich). EPIC will combine the use of genomic, synthetic biology, machine learning and evolutionary approaches with the aim to understand the complete gene expression regulatory code of S. cerevisiae and other eukaryotes.
The recruited candidate will focus on mapping and prediction mRNA boundaries at an unprecedented scale. The candidate will also use the generated information to quantify and predict how mRNA variations lead to divergent mRNA fates. The candidate will integrate different experimental and computational approaches for the completion of the project, including genomics, yeast genetics, high-throughput biology approaches and bioinformatics. The candidate will perform original research in transcriptomics and computational biology, and acquire the required experimental and computational skills necessary for the completion of the project.
The candidate is expected to communicate the scientific results by writing up scientific papers and attending scientific meetings. The ideal candidate will participate in the general duties of the team and effectively communicate with scientists of very diverse backgrounds in a highly interdisciplinary and international environment.
Working language is English.
Your profile
To be eligible for employment as a postdoctor a doctoral degree or a foreign degree deemed to be equivalent to a doctoral degree is required. This eligibility requirement must be fulfilled at the latest at the time of the employment decision. It is considered as an advantage if you have completed your doctoral degree within the last three years, if there are special reasons, your degree may have been completed earlier.
In addition to the aforementioned requirements:
- Applicants to this position should have a PhD in Molecular biology, Biotechnology, Genetics or similar field.
- The successful applicant should have experience interpreting biological data and experimentally testing their hypothesis with a strong interest in interdisciplinary technology development.
- Suitable candidates should have extensive experience with molecular biology methods such as RNA-Seq, ATAC-Seq, molecular cloning and RNA biology.
- Research experience with large-scale analyses and bioinformatics (NGS, batch and/or R/Python scripting languages) is also necessary.
- A strong interest in interdisciplinary technology development, and novel and creative thinking abilities are essential.
- Good interpersonal skills and ability to work in teams is essential.
Meritorius for the position:
- Previous experience in yeast genetics, transcription/post-transcriptional mRNA regulation, high-throughput robotics and synthetic biology will be a merit.
In the appointment, special weight will be attached to scientific skill of relevance to the project and to previous research experience.
