Offer Description

Do you want to contribute to top quality medical research?

The Department of Medical Epidemiology and Biostatistics conducts research in epidemiology and biostatistics across a broad range of areas within biomedical science. The department is among the largest of its type in Europe and has especially strong research profiles in psychiatric, reproductive, pediatric, pharmaco, genetic, and geriatric epidemiology, eating disorders, precision medicine, and biostatistics.

Part of the success of our department is due to our collaborative spirit where one factor is that researchers at the Department share and co-finance common resources (e.g., IT and an applied biostatistics group). The department is situated at campus Solna. Further information can be found at http://ki.se/en/meb

The Department is the project owner of the SISU consortium, which aims to investigate the “Post-Pandemic Vulnerability and Resilience: A bioecological approach towards youth well-being in Nordic Schools and Communities (SISU)”. The SISU consortium led by the Principal Researcher Agnieszka Butwicka, is a collaborative project funded by Nordforsk involving four Nordic countries (Sweden, Norway, Finland, and Iceland). Its objective is to enhance our knowledge of vulnerabilities and resilience to inform future interventions for the improved well-being of young people.

Your mission

We seek a motivated and innovative postdoc to join our leading team at Karolinska Institute. This individual should be passionately committed to furthering the knowledge to improve young people’s mental health.

Research at KI, as part of the SISU consortium, will specifically examine the impact of individual characteristics on the mental health, education, and well-being outcomes of young individuals, with a particular emphasis on vulnerable populations.

SISU builds on exceptional opportunities for Nordic countries with extensive longitudinal data sets, including school and municipality surveys, prospective cohort studies with genetic data, and population-based registries providing comprehensive information on all levels of bio-ecological influences. Methods will include a wide range of genetically informative and quasi-experimental study designs.

The duties will require the use of advanced statistics and high-performance computing resources. The successful applicant will closely collaborate with SISU consortium parents in Norway, Finland, and Iceland.

The open position is for a duration of two years, with the possibility of extension.

Your profile

The position requires a PhD degree with a focus on psychiatry, epidemiology, biostatistics, statistics, or a closely related field.

The applicant should also have the following:

  • Knowledge and experience with classic and modern statistical methods in the genetics field (e.g., structural equation modelling, polygenic risk score).
  • Knowledge and practical skills in epidemiological study designs and statistical analysis (e.g., linear and logistic regression, survival analysis, generalized estimating equation).
  • Prior experience working with large data sets.
  • Experience in managing and analyzing data using advanced programming languages and software (e.g., R, SAS).
  • Exceptional organizational skills and project management.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills in English, along with experience with scientific writing.

The work involves close collaboration with others and demands flexibility and excellent communication skills. A high degree of accuracy and independence is also important. We attach great importance to personal qualities in this recruitment.

To be eligible for employment as a postdoctor a doctoral degree or a foreign degree deemed to be equivalent to a doctoral degree is required. This eligibility requirement must be fulfilled at the latest at the time of the employment decision. It is considered as an advantage if you have completed your doctoral degree within the last three years, if there are special reasons, your degree may have been completed earlier.
