About the role
Applications are invited from enthusiastic, motivated individuals for a CRUK-funded Postdoctoral Researcher position for Professor Madalena Tarsounas’s Group, within the Department of Oncology. You will join an exciting research programme which combines cell/molecular biology and microscopy approaches with high-throughput technologies and bioinformatics to understand how BRCA1 and BRCA2 facilitate DNA replication and how this, in turn, impacts chromosome segregation during mitosis. We have recently mapped genome-wide the sites where mitotic DNA synthesis occurs in BRCA1/2-deficient cells (Groelly et al., Molecular Cell 2022; PMID: 36002001), using state-of-the-art technologies (e.g. MiDAS-seq, high-content microscopy) and found that they co-localise with sites of R-loop formation. We now aim to extend these results to other DNA repair factors and analyse their functions in DNA replication and chromosome segregation in BRCA1/2-deficient cells using similar high-throughput technologies.
Successful applicants will conduct bioinformatics and statistical/computational analysis of genomic and biological datasets, develop novel or tailor methodologies, analytical tools and resources appropriate to the work within the research team. They will be developing/testing hypotheses, generating high-quality and reproducible data, participating in dissemination activities and helping with manuscript preparation. Also, they will be required to provide guidance/supervision to other members of the research group, including DPhil/MRes students.
The position is based in the Department of Oncology, Old Road Campus Research Building, Headington, Oxford, OX3 7DQ and is offered on a full-time, fixed-term basis for two years.
About you
You will hold (or be very close to completing) a DPhil/PhD in Biostatistics, Mathematics, Statistics, Computing or Mathematical Biology and will be proficient in scripting or statistical languages such as R, Python or Perl; being familiar with more than one programming language is desirable.
Familiarity with working in a command line environment and knowledge of the DNA damage repair/genome integrity field are desirable, together with a good record of publication(s) in internationally recognised journals. Experience with processing and downstream analysis of next-generation sequencing data, for instance, RNA-seq, ChIP-seq and/or EdU-seq data would be particularly advantageous.
Application Process
Applicants should read the job description before completing their application. You will be required to upload a supporting statement (setting out how you meet the selection criteria), a CV (including a statement of career interests) and the contact details of two referees, as part of your online application.
Informal enquiries can be directed to Professor Madalena Tarsounas:
Only applications received before midday 30 January 2024 will be considered.
Committed to equality and valuing diversity
