An exciting opportunity has arisen within the Faculty of Engineering’s Powertrain Research Centre for an individual to join our team of highly skilled engineering technicians engaged in the manufacture, assembly, preparation and maintenance of research rigs and equipment. Our technical team works closely with students and staff and engage in a varied portfolio of work across all the University’s engineering disciplines. We believe diverse teams make us stronger. The Role

As the Powertrain Lead Technician, you will have supervisory responsibilities of a team of two technicians supporting research into alternative fuelled internal combustion engines and automotive batteries. You will provide support in either mechanical workshop processes or electro-mechanical / instrumentation. The role is key in contributing to the manufacture of a wide range of components and subsequent assembly into custom research rigs and associated systems in support of research. The role will require a diverse range of engineering techniques and skills. Responsibilities will include liaising with colleagues on design and installation of engine fuel supply circuits, regular maintenance of all mechanical aspects of the test rigs and the management of laboratory health and safety. The role holder will communicate well at all levels from professorial to undergraduate. 

  • Manufacture, assembly, operation, maintenance, servicing, repair and adjustment of precision rigs and associated equipment to support individual research experiments.  
  • Preparing and testing of high-pressure gas pipe systems, as well as maintaining safety devices and repairing/replacing as and when necessary. 
  • Conventional/CNC machining and modification of components OR electro-mechanical / instrumentational design, installation, testing and monitoring of engine test beds. 
  • Specification and ordering of outsourced components and assemblies. 

Your Experience 

  • Principles of mechanical assembly.
  • Attained at least an HNC in an engineering discipline or experience in a relevant role.
  • It is desirable to have a working knowledge of CAD programs, such as Solidworks, Autodesk Inventor, or similar.

The position is offered on a full-time (36.25 hours per week), permanent contract. Job share arrangements may be considered.
