Launched in 2019, UNSW Tax and Business Advisory Clinic identifies and supports people in serious financial hardship by providing them with free tax and accounting advice and education (enabling them to navigate a system that is almost impossible to navigate if unrepresented), conducting breakthrough grassroots research, and creating international award-winning work-integrated learning opportunities for university students.

In addition to overseeing the Clinic’s operations, the role provides strategic and administrative support to the Clinic Director and Principal Clinic Supervisor. The role is essential to advance, develop, evaluate and maintain the Clinic’s bold aim of reducing inequalities and catalysing positive social change by disrupting the systems that create disadvantage – working for a more equitable business landscape and, in turn, a more just society. This aligns with the Faculty’s mission and the University’s strategic plan.

Responsibilities:

Specific responsibilities for this role include (but are not limited to):

  • Work with the Clinic Director, Principal Clinic Supervisor and other key stakeholders to actively contribute to the ongoing development, review and refinement of the Clinic’s strategic plan, including expanding the Clinic’s scale and scope.
  • Provide strategic management and operational leadership and advice to the Clinic Director on the full range of Clinic activities and performance, overseeing the day to day running of the Clinic.
  • Effectively plan, manage and allocate resources to deliver Clinic services in all functional areas including learning and teaching, research, training and administration.
  • Demonstrate effective liaison, collaboration and negotiation skills with key stakeholders on Clinic operational matters, including representing the Clinic on relevant committees and undertaking special projects.
  • Oversee the financial operations, controls and applications for funding within the Clinic, consistent with Faculty and University strategy, policies and procedures.
  • Work with key business partners across operational areas to effectively manage, provide advice and report on areas including; budget and finances, human resources, facilities and physical resources, records and more.

Skills and experience required (but not limited to):

  • Relevant tertiary qualification with subsequent relevant experience or equivalent competence gained through any combination of education, training and experience.
  • Demonstrated experience in senior management in a large and complex institution.
  • Proven leadership skills and experience in a research environment with a strong understanding of research funding sources, schemes and grants, and the research regulatory and policy environment.
  • Demonstrated understanding of external funding rules, related industry and university policies and procedures around the management of research and research finance.
  • Commitment to continuous improvement and problem solving in complex settings with the ability to provide sound strategic advice, develop and implement operation plans, policies and systems aligned to strategic objectives.
  • Ability to proactively manage projects without supervision.
  • Strong ability to manage workflow effectively in a dynamic and fast-changing environment, with superior time management, problem-solving and organisational skills.
  • Demonstrated success in developing partnerships with industry and research institutes and facilitating industry engagement.

About you:

  • We are looking for someone with proven skills in strategic management, operational leadership and ability to manage a fast paced and complex work unit.
  • You have experience in a large organisation – ideally a university, and have experience in overseeing budgets, finances, human resources and facilities with a focus on following policy and procedure related to clinic operations.
  • Coordinate research initiatives and applications for competitive funding and philanthropic applications.
  • Engage with stakeholders and have led significant projects with a societal impact.
