Primary Purpose The Pre-Apprenticeship Career Coach is responsible for working with students to provide wrap around services, prepare for job search and placement, and explore registered Apprenticeship opportunities.
This is a grant funded position with secure funding through June 2025, and is not guaranteed beyond that date.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities Case Management/Coaching:
  • Assist Pre-Apprenticeship students in developing a portfolio to address and support short – and long-term academic and career goals.
  • Meet regularly with students to monitor progress and provide individual coaching and support, all with the goal of increasing student retention. Example activities include coaching students on basic student success skills, including time management, organizing study groups, connecting with faculty and related activities.
  • Coach students on job search strategies providing support and encouragement in the job search process.
  • Collaborate with COCC Admissions and Records and CAP services to provide additional support and connection to COCC resources.

Industry Connection:

  • Coordinate with industry partners to identify and create a system for employment opportunities.
  • Develop ongoing opportunities for industry partners to network with program graduates through recruitment events and interviews.
  • Collaborate with Registered Apprenticeship partners to identify and track application windows and program requirements.

Recruitment/Outreach:

  • In partnership with Admissions and Records and the Office of High School Partnerships, establish and maintain working relationships with school counselors, career centers, teachers, local vocational and workforce training programs, local employers, and community organizations.
  • In partnership with Admissions and Records, design, implement, and facilitate interactive outreach presentations in a variety of settings: high schools, alternative program classrooms, career and college fairs, trades fairs, high school future centers, and virtual information sessions.

Data Tracking:

  • Monitor student academic and employment progress as needed to submit local, state and federal reports.
  • Maintain student case files to regularly track course benchmarks, individual student goals, training site (internships and other experiential learning opportunities), attendance and related areas.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Individuals must possess these knowledge, skills and abilities or be able to explain and demonstrate that the individual can perform the duties and responsibilities of the job, with or without reasonable accommodation, using some other combination of skills and abilities.   • Ability to advise students on a wide range of college and individual success strategies, as well as on institutional policies and processes, including admissions, academic planning, trade interest identification, goal development, classroom success and self-advocacy.
  • Provide leadership, advocate for, and support recruitment efforts that target students who have been underrepresented aimed at increasing diversity in the skilled trades workforce. Includes developing materials in Spanish.
  • Knowledge of planning, implementing, and supporting educational programs and activities.
  • Ability to build and maintain strong partnerships with community organizations.
  • Ability to communicate and develop strong working relationships with people from different cultural backgrounds and other aspects of human diversity; possess a high degree of cultural competence.
  • Strong interpersonal, organizational, and oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and to use good judgment with respect to priorities and deadlines.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with students, staff, and faculty from diverse backgrounds.
  • Ability to manage conflicts within and/or between groups and to work in a team environment.
  • Ability to meet deadlines, set work priorities, and manage workload.
  • Ability to use software programs and database systems which include Microsoft Office Suite, email, website editing, basic desktop publishing, and modern office equipment.
Ergonomic Requirements Regular office hours are established between 8 am – 4 pm during the workweek. A flexible work schedule, including nights and weekends, may be necessary due to the nature of the responsibilities.
Incumbent must be able to function effectively indoors in an office environment engaged in work of primarily a sedentary nature. Requires the ability to work at a workstation for extended periods. Requires to write, read written materials and computer screens, and ability to use telephonic conversations. Occasional lifting up to 25lbs. All individuals are required to perform essential functions with or without reasonable accommodation.
Minimum Requirements Education:
  • Bachelor’s Degree in education, business, or related field.

Experience:

  • Two years’ related experience in social services, career/workforce development, student affairs positions, and/or employment and training programs.

License:

  • Valid Driver’s License, as occasional travel is required for this position.

Preferred Qualifications Experience:
  • Experience in workforce development programming.
  • Experience working in higher education.
  • Experience working on Federal, State, and/or local grants.
  • Experience providing career coaching and job readiness resources to individuals.
