Principal Occupational Health Nurse

Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory has an opening for a Principal Occupational Health Nurse Practitioner to join the Environmental, Health, and Safety (EH&S ) team. Reporting to the Clinical Manager, the Senior Health Nurse will apply occupational nursing principles, directed toward conserving the health of workers and maintaining a safe and healthful environment in the workplace. They will be responsible for performing various medical examinations and providing appropriate treatment and testing for acute injury and illness as allowed under protocol and standardized procedure and the Nurse Practice Act. 

 

What You Will Do:

Clinical

  • Injury and Illness Treatment: Evaluate and treat acute or serious injury (e.g., injections, sutures, fractures, concussions), or illness (e.g., chest pain, seizures, respiratory emergencies), or chemical exposures, as allowed under Standardized Procedure and the Nurse Practice Act. Utilize expert professional clinical judgment to determine and arrange proper disposition of employees to a hospital, appropriate physician(s), home or return to work. Collaborate with Health Services Clinical Manager and/or the Site Occupational Medical Director as needed to coordinate care, seek clinical help, and inform of worker injuries.

  • Contribute to the success of worksite health and safety programs and help optimize employees’ health, by performing various medical surveillance exams (e.g.,medical and work histories, physical assessment, blood tests, audiograms, pulmonary function tests.)

  • Occupational Hazards: Identify real and potential health problems and hazards at the workplace through methods including work-site surveys, toxicological literature research, and analysis of OSHA 200 logs and accident reports. Maintain familiarity with workplace hazards, including chemical, physical and radiological hazards. Consult with other safety and health team members to improve occupational health practices and eliminate safety hazards.

  • Case Management: Collaborate with the Clinical manager and/or the Site Occupational Medical Director, clinic and HR staff for the assessment, planning, coordination and monitoring of quality and cost-effective options and services necessary to optimize the occupationally injured workers’ recovery and successful return to work.

  • Protect the confidentiality of personal health information as required by law.

 

Administrative/Programmatic Support

  • Assist with or lead the the formulation, administration, and documentation of health programs, including Standard Operating Procedures, of health programs, including AAAHC re-accreditation. Program types may include injury prevention, injury treatment, medical surveillance, health promotion, disease management and case management.

  • Participate in management and peer review of clinical care and program effectiveness to ensure quality, including documenting quality improvement studies and outcomes.

  • Apply knowledge of nursing principles and health program administration to provide advice, leadership, and recommendations toward the formulation and/or improvement of Health Services programs.

  • Being able to communicate  with a variety of individuals or groups of employees, including managers, to explain and answer questions about occupational health and wellness programs.

  • Attend offsite meetings to receive medical education or represent LBNL in national professional association meetings or meetings of Department of Energy contractors.

  • Analyze, document and present data or information related to Health Services programs and services to a variety of individuals.

  • Provide accurate written reports to applicable standards and ensure that this information is entered into the CHESS database and or the clinic’s current EMRsystem, or other electronic medical records used in the future.

  • Provide essential support services during localized or site-wide emergencies, including those that relate directly to the health, safety, and welfare of the Lab, ensure continuity of key operations, and maintain and protect Lab properties.

 

What is Required:

  • Graduate of a Master’s level program, preferably with an emphasis in Occupational Health nursing. Will consider an adult, family, or gerontology primary care with experience in occupational health. 

  • Minimum of 3 years as a Registered Nurse or Physician Assistant, preferably in Occupational Health nursing.

  • DEA license.

  • Strong clinical judgment, critical thinking, collaborative and administrative capabilities, substantial nursing expertise, and demonstrated knowledge of professional nursing principles with strong communication skills. 

  • Proven verbal and written communications to effectively interact with and talk to small and large groups of employees, including managers, to explain and answer questions about occupational health and wellness programs.

  • Knowledge of applicable federal, State of California and local regulations, including worker’s compensation laws and case management experience. Able to develop a working knowledge of complex Laboratory policies and procedures.

  • Proficient with standard computer systems and applications in a professional business setting. Ability to utilize computer programs and software to analyze, document and present data and information. Ability to multitask and prioritize in a dynamic environment.

  • Certification or the ability/willingness  to gain certification in spirometry, audiometry, and CPR, and other certification as determined by the Clinical Manager.

  • Ability to lift, carry and transport up to 50 lbs.

  • Evidence of immunity or declination of vaccination in accordance with OSHA Bloodborne Pathogen rule.

  • Ability to travel as needed to attend meetings, receive medical education, and/or represent LBNL, in addition to providing occasional coverage in the evenings, weekends, or holidays.

 

Desired Qualifications:

  • Nurse Practitioner with a minimum of 3 years of experience as an NP, preferably in occupational health

  • Licensed as a Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant in the State of California with an active license and furnishing number.

  • Board certification as an Adult,  Family, or Gerontology Primary care nursegeriatric Nurse Practitioner.

  • Familiarity with additional occupational health fields such as industrial hygiene and occupational safety.

  • Certification as an occupational health nurse (COHN or COHN-S), or similar certification. 

  • Urgent care or emergency room experience.

  • Statistical analysis skills.

  • Ability to interpret regulations. Knowledge of the regulatory process and experience in monitoring regulatory developments.

 

Notes:

  • This is a full-time career appointment, exempt (monthly paid) from overtime pay.

  • This position is expected to pay $144,900.00 – $177,108.00, which fits within the full salary range of $128,808.00 – $217,356.00 for the H70.3 – Occupational Health Pr Nurse. Salary for this position will be commensurate with the final candidate’s qualifications and experience, including skills, knowledge, relevant education, and certifications, and also aligned with the internal peer group.

  • This position will be hired at a level commensurate with the business needs and the skills, knowledge, and abilities of the successful candidate.
