Principal Urban Designer (England South) 

  • £40,840 per annum (pro rata for part time hours)

  • Base: Sustrans offices in Bristol with the flexibility to work from home. 

About the role 

A new and exciting opportunity to work with Sustrans, leading a small team of Urban Designers
assisting to deliver the vision for liveable cities and towns, and paths for everyone.

As the Principal Urban Designer, you will be responsible for leading the team in its production
of high quality and technically competent design solutions. You will also represent Sustrans at
conferences and meeting with local authorities, external partners and funding bodies as well as
members of the public.

Contributing to South Design and Engineering team, you will work alongside the Engineers with
the responsibility of technical quality assurance, project management and building a pipeline
of external funding. You will also be required to share best practice as well as influencing
policy to raise ambition for improved active travel infrastructure 

This role will require travel and work at locations as necessary to undertake projects on
behalf of Sustrans. 

About you 

You should have experience of leading, motivating and managing a team to deliver high profile
project to budget and programme, as well as expertise in the production of technical drawing
and specifications using design software. We ask that you have experience of leading business
development and bid writing.

With the ability to build relationships with ease across a wide range of people such as
contractors, supporters and community groups, using your proven verbal and communication skills
to negotiate and influence. 

You will have strong organisational skills plus the ability to plan and prioritise work across
multiple projects, as well as interpersonal, teamworking, and networking skills. 

For the role of Principal Urban Designer, you will need have a Minimum Degree or equivalent in
a relevant field (Civil Engineering, Traffic Engineering, Urban Design, Landscape Architecture
or an alternative, relevant and demonstrable specialism) plus 6 years’ work experience. OR 10
years’ work experience in a relevant role / related field as well as a Chartered professional
status or be close to attaining this.
