The Atlantic has, for more than 160 years, advanced ideas that matter and sparked global conversation on the most important issues of our time. We aim to bring clarity and original thinking to questions of consequence, on topics ranging from politics, the economy, and global affairs to technology, science, and culture. As the third-longest-running magazine in America, we find ourselves at a remarkable moment: one of both continuation and transformation, of upholding our legacy while continuously reinventing ourselves for the future.
The Atlantic is seeking a short term Production Assistant (PA) to support our audio team for 6 months. This PA will be assigned to support upcoming seasons of the How To podcast. The ideal candidate will be creative, versatile, highly organized, knowledgeable about several areas of culture, and well-read in social science and audio journalism. The position is part-time.
The PA will work with some of the sharpest editors, producers, and reporters in the audio business to help support thoughtful examinations of why we do the things we do and feel the ways we feel, and how to change those habits to live the lives we want to live.
We work quickly and with an eye toward identifying and unpacking big ideas and questions. We’re looking for a production assistant to:
Research great guests (e.g., academics, scholars, researchers, authors of memoirs and other books related to social science)
Pre-interview guests with an understanding of what makes for a good conversation
Help schedule and facilitate studio recordings
Draft web content
Identify strong tape and pull selects in consultation with colleagues
Occasionally provide rough cuts of interviews and selects
1-2 years experience in audio journalism
Impeccable news judgment and an eye for argument and stylish execution
A track record of working with high-level journalists
Familiarity with Pro-tools audio editing (or similar audio editing software)
Experience editing and working with Descript (or ability to learn quickly)
Experience working in a recording studio (or ability to quickly learn)
Familiarity with The Atlantic and its Family, Ideas, and Culture coverage and authors
Facility for identifying compelling ideas and communicating them to a general-interest audience
Openness to a wide variety of views and perspectives
Ability to work quickly, switch gears as needed, and meet deadlines
Close attention to detail and high standards for accuracy
A collaborative spirit, and an ability to communicate effectively
This job is a 6 month part-time position that will require approximately 24 hours a week of work. The hourly rate for this position is between $26.44-$31.25 per hour and will include The Atlantic’s full benefits package. This position is based at The Atlantic’s office in Washington, D.C.
