This is a tenured Professor & Department Head position that will lead the Criminal Justice Department in the School of Criminology, Criminal Justice, and Public Administration with undergraduate, masters, and Ph.D. degree programs across five Tarleton State University campuses. Tarleton is classified by Carnegie as high research activity or R2 designation and is a member institution of the Texas A&M System. The Criminal Justice Department is home to 13 full-time tenured or tenure track faculty members, about 550-600 undergraduate majors, 75+ master students, and 20+ doctoral students. The Department Head is primarily responsible for department management as well as teaching, research, and service activities. The Department Head will also participate in the necessary operations of the university. Work hours: Mon-Fri; 8 AM-5 PM or as work and teaching requirements dictate. Must be able to work/teach remotely and travel to main campus/outreach campuses at the request of the University.

Responsibilities:

30% Faculty Responsibility :

Teach 9 hours per academic year. Maintain an active record of scholarly research including peer-reviewed publications and grant-funded research. Maintain professional involvement in criminology and criminal justice organizations and activities at the national, state, and local levels. Attend official university, college, school, and department functions. Participate in curriculum development and student organizational activities. Participate in program assessment. Mentor students.

35% Program Responsibility :

Work collaboratively with faculty to establish a strategic plan and prioritize program goals including: enrollment growth, program recognition, program quality, faculty development, student learning outcomes, and assessment. Evaluate achievement of program goals and university priorities for the department. Monitor the curriculum to ensure compliance with any State and Federal regulations, including the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board, and with the general trends in the academic field of Criminology and Criminal Justice. Serve on departmental, college, and university committees as requested by the Associate Dean. Development of, and participation in, recruiting and orientation activities for transfer and beginning students. Assure all program components, including quality education on the main campus, satellite campuses, and online platforms. Initiate community and practitioner relationships and serve as a liaison for the purpose of program development. Oversee course and curriculum development, revision, and catalog updates. Facilitate academic advising for undergraduate and graduate students. Maintain and grow the department by increasing the number of majors and enrolled students across all programs. Facilitate management of the online database for the Criminal Justice Program, including assessment, measurements, objectives, and strategies. Maintain campus and program sequences for all criminal justice degrees offered at all campuses. Manage staffing oversight of student organizations with Criminal Justice faculty to produce solid student organizations. Ensure alignment of TCOLE requirements and standards with the B.A.A.S. program. Perform other duties as assigned.

35% Administrative Responsibility :

Participate in the recruitment, hiring, supervising, and development of faculty and staff within the Department of Criminal Justice by making recommendations to the Associate Dean. Mentor and evaluate faculty and make recommendations to the Associate Dean on tenure, promotion, salary increases, and any other personnel needs. Develop course schedules and negotiate teaching workloads. Manage staffing, particularly regarding academic advising of students. Attend meetings as requested by the Associate Dean. Maintain a connection with the Graduate Council by supplying a regular program representative and dissemination of meeting results to the Associate Dean and all graduate faculty. Hire and ensure proper credentialing and supervision of adjuncts at all campus locations. Establish budgets for department operations, faculty development, and expenditures for instructional equipment as requested and authorized by the Associate Dean. Oversee Criminal Justice financial accounts and make recommendations to the Associate Dean for program expenditures.

Education and Experience:

Faculty in the rank of Professor shall hold a doctorate degree (Ph.D.) in Criminology and/or Criminal Justice and obtained tenure with the rank of full professor from an accredited institution. The rank of Professor with tenure is appropriate for an individual who has a strong record of teaching and who has made significant scholarly contributions to the body of knowledge in the field of criminology and criminal justice as evidenced by an active and quality research portfolio. Further, the professor’s academic work is expected to have contributed to the academic literature as demonstrated by citations to their scholarship. Candidates must have a minimum of ten years of full-time academic experience at the post-secondary level.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Ability to provide visionary leadership, design and execute a strategic plan, and facilitate department goal achievement. Previous management and leadership experience at an accredited academic institution. Possession of outstanding communication skills including interpersonal, writing, presentation, and listening skills. Ability to effectively communicate with the criminal justice practitioner community and develop partnerships. Demonstrated excellence in teaching, research, and service. Academic achievement both within and outside the University environment. Previous experience teaching in a Ph.D. program is strongly preferred but not required.
