About the opportunity

The DVC Education portfolio supports the development and implementation of the University’s strategy and vision for teaching and learning and students’ educational experience. The portfolio contributes to institution-wide developments aimed at improving student learning, including the University’s approach to curriculum renewal, new thinking in pedagogy, learning and teaching analytics, eLearning and quality assurance for learning and teaching. Its primary functions include professional learning and support for educational excellence and innovation; academic enrichment through curricular and cocurricular programs; and strategic, policy, analytics and administrative support in implementing and monitoring the University’s vision for learning and teaching.
The Educational Innovation (EI) team provides integrated professional development and support for all aspects of learning and teaching, under the leadership of the PVC (Educational Innovation). The team supports whole-of-University professional learning, research and innovative thinking in pedagogy, learning and teaching analytics, e-learning and quality assurance for learning and teaching.
The “Education Focused” category is designed for educators known for their exceptional skills in teaching, assessment and curriculum design. Professors within this category are recognised both internationally and within the University for their expertise in evidence-based effective educational delivery. These professors are deeply involved in driving pedagogical advancements, engaging in scholarly discussions, and influencing educational practices and guidelines. They commit a significant portion of their workload— 70% —to educational endeavours, and a further 20% of their workload to research, underscoring their dedication to the academic mission.
The Professor (Education Focused) Higher Education Practice plays a pivotal role in shaping the University’s education culture and enhancing the academic community by supporting and promoting excellence in education practice and scholarship.
The work of the Professor (Education Focused) Higher Education Practice involves maintaining a leading position in educational design and delivery, focusing on improving student learning outcomes, and spearheading educational innovations. Key responsibilities include leading the Educators Community of Practice, which includes more than 200 new Sydney Horizon Educators who will join the University during 2024-2026

The Professor (Education Focused) Higher Education Practice will have a strong record of educational research and be able to assist colleagues establish educational research profiles and projects that contribute to the improvement of student learning outcomes at the discipline, University or sector level. Through this work, the Professor (Education Focused) Higher Education Practice will drive learning innovation and data-driven improvement in teaching practice to elevate the University’s educational stature, ensuring alignment with strategic goals, and enhancing the staff and student experience.
The position significantly contributes to mentoring for academic success and fostering a positive workplace culture that values diversity, teaching excellence, and collaboration. Additionally, the role includes advancing the University’s strategic objectives, engaging with external communities, and leading partnerships that promote educational excellence and development of high-quality, evidence-driven practice at national and international levels.
About you (skills, capabilities and experience)
The Professor (Education Focused) Higher Education Practice will be recognised internationally as a leading expert in educational design and delivery, with a notable track record for enhancing student outcomes, pioneering educational innovations, and contributions to the body of knowledge around student learning. They will have been acknowledged for their educational excellence through various awards and their ability to secure external funding for research. With substantial leadership and management experience in higher education, the Professor (Education Focused) Higher Education Practice will excel in supervising and mentoring colleagues towards success. Their proven expertise extends from curriculum development to conducting prominent education research, mentoring others to research excellence, and fostering an environment conducive to student success.
Key accountabilities
- Provide academic leadership for the Educators Community of Practice, maintaining ongoing and significant engagement with the Community, and building its membership and impact over time.
- Collaborate with and upskill members of the Educators Community of Practice in scholarly projects (including education-related research) to address education problems of significance at the University
- Develop and drive strategic initiatives tailored initiatives aligned with institutional goals and the needs of a diverse student body
- Collaborate with University leadership and academic and professional staff to drive transformative change in student-centred practices
- Maintain a leading position in educational design and delivery as a scholar of teaching and learning through education-related research, practice innovation, and engagement with the scholarly education community within and beyond the University.
Term and remuneration
The successful candidate will be offered a continuing position on a full-time basis and will be offered a competitive remuneration package commensurate with the responsibilities of the position and the candidate’s relevant experience and qualifications.
