University of Bristol seeks to appoint an outstanding  academic as their first Professor of Data Centre Networks. This newly created post will further drive the University’s research excellence in digital communication and networking technologies and will contribute to maintaining Bristol’s global reputation in these fields.

The postholder will work across two strategic initiatives: the University’s flagship Centre for Telecommunications, Smart Internet Lab, and the Bristol Digital Futures Institute (BDFI). These two initiatives, supported by strong industrial partnerships, combine to make the University of Bristol a powerhouse in driving digital transformation for a better future. The research focus of this post will align with the University of Bristol’s 2030 strategy and will specifically support transformative research in the design of Future Communications Networks with a mission to address key  themes in Data Centre Network architecture.

This will be a Professorial appointment within the Faculty of Science & Engineering’s School of Electrical, Electronic and Mechanical Engineering (EEME), reporting to the Electronic and Networking Academic Team Leader.

This postholder will contribute to the University’s impressive record of consistently delivering world-leading research, as was demonstrated in the REF 2021: in Unit of Assessment 11 (Computer Science and Informatics), it was graded as 68% 4* and 32% 3*. In Unit of Assessment 12 (Engineering), it was graded as 58% 4* and 40% 3*.

The nature of this post means that as well as advancing research in an exciting new area for the University, underpinned by  its existing research expertise, the successful candidate will also have an  integral role in providing high quality and innovative teaching in future communications networks and their applications. This is a unique opportunity not only to contribute to the advancement of research in these areas, with institutional and industrial backing, but also to shape the futures of those who will rely upon it in their careers.

Candidates should have a credible research record, demonstrating leadership across Data Centre Networks and Optical Communications Networks together with a proven ability to attract substantial research grants from both government funding agencies and industry. The successful candidate will also  be able to  design and deliver excellent teaching at both undergraduate and postgraduate level and will be committed to growing this area of research for the University. Candidates will have a PhD in either Electronics, Computer Science or a closely related technology discipline or the equivalent experience from industry.

This is an excellent opportunity to have a global impact on the field of communications networks through both research and teaching at a world-leading institution.
