1. ORGANIZATIONAL SETTING

The World Maritime University (WMU) is a postgraduate and research university established in 1983 by the International Maritime Organization, a specialized agency of the United Nations. WMU offers M.Sc. and Ph.D. programmes, Postgraduate Diplomas, and Professional Development Courses (PDCs) with the highest standards in maritime and oceans education and training. WMU also has a highly respected research programme supported by specialized research groups across the maritime and ocean fields. The Professor position is located in the Faculty unit at WMU’s headquarters in Malmö, Sweden.

 

2. MAIN PURPOSE

The Professor, Shipping Technology and Maritime Management (Chinese Chair), is responsible, under the supervision of the Vice-President (Academic Affairs) and Head of Maritime Energy Management Specialization, for the coordination and delivery of teaching, research and MSc/PhD student supervision in the maritime energy management and maritime decarbonization fields.

As a member of the faculty and professional staff at WMU, the incumbent will work to keep WMU positioned as an academic institution of excellence, help advance the institution and build its reputation in the relevant field of expertise.

 

3. WORKING RELATIONSHIPS

Internal contacts – Incumbent liaises and interacts with all faculty members on a regular basis as well as with research and support staff as required.

External contacts – Incumbent liaises with scientific and industry communities, research organizations, intergovernmental organizations, non-governmental organizations, and engages with scientific journals and publishing entities.

 

4. DUTIES, RESPONSIBILITIES

The Professor is expected, under the supervision of the Vice-President (Academic Affairs) and Head of Maritime Energy Management Specialization, to be engaged in:

  • Teaching, including engagement in the MSc teaching programmes in Malmö, and other locations as needed and assigned;
  • Mentoring of PhD and MSc students and supervision of research theses/dissertations in the maritime energy management and maritime decarbonization fields;
  • Scholarship in the form of publications in peer-reviewed journals, books, book chapters, etc.;
  • Development of projects, submission of project proposals, and delivery of such projects;
  • Presentation of research findings at professional conferences and meetings;
  • Involvement in distance learning (e-learning) programmes, PDCs, and capacity-building courses as required;
  • Service on WMU committees and work groups, and active participation in administrative, academic, and curriculum duties, including curriculum reform and delivery;
  • Developing partnerships with partner organizations – increasingly UN system bodies with ocean-related responsibilities and objectives – for collaborative activities;
  • Co-ordinating collaborative activities between WMU and International Institutions and NGOs respecting research and other activities in the marine environmental protection field;
  • Coordinating and participating in student field studies;
  • Supervising research staff, visiting professors, and related support staff related to the marine environmental protection field;
  • Assisting the Vice Presidents (Academic Affairs and International) in directing the activities of the University, particularly in relation to maritime energy management related academic, research and consultancy programmes;
  • Undertaking special projects and other duties, as required.

 

5. MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS – EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND LANGUAGE SKILLS

EDUCATION

Essential

  • PhD in the area of naval architecture, marine engineering, nautical sciences or marine technology/innovation, with particular expertise in maritime energy management, maritime decarbonization, air pollution from international shipping or shipping technology.

EXPERIENCE

Essential

  • A Minimum of 7 years’ experience in teaching at the postgraduate level and an excellent track record in research and scholarly publication within above-mentioned areas;
  • The capability to conduct independent and/or collaborative research within the scope of “Maritime Energy Management” and “Marine/Maritime Technology/Innovation” Research Priority Areas of WMU, and to obtain external research funding.

Desirable

  • Knowledge of and experience in shipbuilding, domestic shipping, technology foresight or industry 4.0 including AI and autonomous shipping;
  • Minimum of 5 years’ experience in teaching at the postgraduate level, preferably within the areas of shipping technology, ship design and energy efficiency, air pollution related regulatory framework (MARPOL in particular), and alternative technologies;
  • Professional experience in the maritime transport sector is desirable, as is seafaring experience.

LANGUAGE SKILLS

Essential

  • Excellent command of English both spoken and written.

Desirable

  • Knowledge of another UN language would be an advantage.

 

6. KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS

Essential

  • Thorough knowledge of IMO, other UN institutions and International NGOs with maritime and ocean-related mandates, their aims, objectives and activities;
  • Knowledge of the links between the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals and marine environmental protection;
  • Commitment to academic excellence in an international maritime and ocean sectoral environment;
  • Understanding of and familiarity with the maritime and ocean industries and their current challenges;
  • Experience in developing and attracting research projects and stakeholder engagement and participation in the maritime and ocean sectors. Demonstrated capacity to provide relevant and effective technical advice on the technical area and related topics;
  • Ability to conceptualize, design, plan and implement research work, including analysis and ability to lead effectively research work and guide and coordinate the work of the research team;
  • The ability to work in a multicultural environment and to demonstrate gender-sensitive and nondiscriminatory behaviour.

Desirable

  • Good understanding of WMU and its mission, and strong commitment to the delivery of the highest practicable standards in pursuing its mandate;
  • Demonstrated leadership and management skills and a track record of success in managing research and publications with a focus on the marine environmental protection field;
  • Diversified working experience, especially at the international level;
  • Computer literacy;
  • The ability to enthuse and motivate and supervise research and support staff;
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills;
  • Team building and leadership skills.
