Position Overview

Nationwide Children’s Hospital (NCH) and The Ohio State University College of Dentistry (CoD) seek applications for the position of Chief of Dentistry at NCH and Chair of the CoD’s Division of Pediatric Dentistry, a faculty position at the rank of full or associate professor. Responsibilities include leadership of the pre-doctoral training program and the degree-granting residency program in Pediatric Dentistry; participation in advanced pediatric dentistry clinical and didactic training; oversight of patient care at Nationwide Children’s Hospital and the Ohio State University College of Dentistry; and promoting and participating in scholarly activities.

The Pediatric Chair is responsible for the administration and leadership of the division; strategic curriculum planning; resource management; development of junior faculty; oversight of the residency and graduate clinic; pre-doctoral didactic and clinical curricula; scheduling management; and evaluation of staff and faculty. Other duties include supporting the overall mission of the division, participating in university and college governance, and contributing to the college’s continuing education and alumni affairs programs.

Performance Objectives

  • Lead the Division of Pediatric Dentistry in decision-making and strategic priority setting, and other duties as assigned.
  • Contribute to functions of the CoD Executive Committee by representing the interests of the Division.
  • Contribute to functions of the Nationwide Children’s Hospital Surgical Executive Committee by representing the interests of the department of dentistry.
  • Develop and monitor Division goals and objectives that are aligned with those of the CoD and the University especially related to the pre-doctoral didactic and clinical curricula.
  • Convene periodic Division meetings to share information and discuss matters of interest.
  • Preparing annual reviews of faculty and staff who support your program, and when appropriate, make salary adjustment recommendations.
  • Advise and conduct appropriate faculty and staff development activities for the Division.
  • Work with the CoD Office of Human Resources, and NCH Office of Human Resources as applicable, in employee HR matters (staff and faculty) that arise within the program.
  • Work with the College’s Chief Administrative Officer to develop and meet annual budgets and financial plans for the program.
  • Participate in College-sponsored functions that promote collegiality within the institution and across the university (e.g., faculty meetings, White Coat Ceremony, Convocation, Faculty Retreat, etc.).
  • Participate in, and lead, necessary and appropriate Division and College teaching responsibilities.
  • Ensure faculty compliance with federal, state, university and hospital policies and regulations.
  • Enhance curriculum development through collaboration with faculty in the CoD and other Colleges at OSU to ensure the highest quality of didactic and clinical education experiences for our students and residents.
  • Collaborate with the Associate Deans for Clinical Affairs/Patient Care, Academic Affairs, and Advanced Education and Graduate Studies to ensure didactic and clinical opportunities for students/residents are compliant with CODA standards.
  • Promote and facilitate innovative technology to improve clinical and non-clinical education, research, and service.
  • Implement and monitor clinical and non-clinical outcome measures for continuous quality assessment and accreditation purposes.
  • Engage in College, University, and national professional services appropriate for you as Division Chair.
  • Lead the dental quality improvement activities and, in collaboration with the Director of Quality, Risk and Compliance, ensure appropriate goals are set for all indicators.
  • Ensure all oral health services functions achieve expected clinical, productivity, and financial outcomes.
  • Lead and direct the development, implementation, and monitoring of high-quality dental care services including creating a strong and high functioning oral health workforce.
  • Serve as an active member of the College’s Credential and Privileging Committee.
  • Serve or delegate membership on the Dental Faculty Practice Board

Education and Experience Requirements

R equired : Candidates must have a DDS/DMD degree or international equivalent degree, a certificate from a CODA accredited advanced education program in pediatric dentistry, and be eligible for a regular license by the Ohio State Dental Board (dental.ohio.gov/Licensure/Dentist ). Candidates must be certified by the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry. The successful candidate will have evidence of leadership in pediatric dentistry as demonstrated by an outstanding clinical reputation, a successful academic program, and accomplished mentees. The candidate must have expertise in leading growth and change efforts in the development of new clinical, educational, or scientific programs. The candidate must be focused on a team-oriented, collegial, and collaborative leadership style with extensive performance management experience.

Desired: Preference will be given to candidates with advanced degree(s), experience in teaching and clinical practice, involvement in the accreditation process, and administrative experience with a demonstrated record of recruitment and retention of faculty. An understanding of and experience with complex hospital and educational organizational landscapes with an ability to anticipate and respond to challenges and opportunities is a plus.

Candidates must also possess excellent interpersonal and communication skills and a desire to create an environment that promotes collegiality, collaboration, inclusivity, and diversity among members of various educational, research, and service-related communities. A willingness to serve as a role model and advocate for professionalism and high ethical standards in a health science educational setting is essential. The College

The College of Dentistry (CoD) distinguishes itself nationally by engaging faculty throughout the campus, around the state, and across the country in a host of experiences that provide enriching opportunities. The College of Dentistry is Ohio’s only state-supported dental school, and it educates more than 60% of the state’s dentists. Comprised of ten divisions, the College supports nine advanced education programs accredited by the Commission on Dental Accreditation. In pre-doctoral clinical education, eight small group practice clinics that focus on comprehensive care will provide an ideal environment for dental and dental hygiene students to work in a vertically integrated model for delivering care.

Nationwide Children’s Hospital

Nationwide Children’s Hospital is the largest pediatric hospital in the United States. In 2024, the division is projected to provide 34,000 dental visits and 3,000 surgical and sedation procedures. NCH’s Department of Dentistry, with Sections of Pediatric Dentistry, Orthodontics, and Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, provides the full range of dental and ancillary services in a state-of-the-art 30-chair dental clinic that has CBCT and digital scanning capabilities.  This is complemented by a surgery center with three operating rooms, both the clinic and the surgery center use Epic Wisdom EHR and digital radiography. The pediatric dentistry residency training program is CODA-approved for 20 residents with NCH serving as the primary clinical training site.
