The Program Associate for the Project ROOTS program will support project-related responsibilities related to the human trafficking prevention initiative and Positive Youth Development (PYD), including: 1) supporting ongoing maintenance and revision for the Project ROOTS toolkit and facilitator training 2) provide direct facilitation of the ROOTS toolkit with youth in the community and in the Youth Transition Center (formerly known as Juvenile Hall) 3) support logistics with partners for program implementation 4) participate and engage in youth focused, community events with the purpose of elevating the program for expansion and increased youth reach 5) Facilitate youth advisory body to promote meaningful youth engagement and provide youth voice in PYD programming development and tools.
Responsibilities
Project Roots Train the Trainer
- Assist in the planning and development of facilitator training, capacity building, and mentor support system (i.e., prepares space, develops materials, contacts presenters, collects debrief forms)
- Support logistics for monthly Youth Advocacy Coalition Meetings (i.e., note taking, researching learning topics, contributing best practices and lessons learned to community of practice)
- Review PYD strategies, trauma informed programming and human trafficking prevention strategies and statistics to inform updates to TOT tools and presentations.
Project ROOTS Toolkit
- Maintain Project ROOTS curriculum development, updates, and enhancements- ensure it is age and culturally appropriate, updating with new relevant data, research, and interventions.
- Conduct desk research through existing evidence published in journals and other relevant references to update learning plans and activities with relevant findings on climate action and financial empowerment to be included in the ROOTS toolkit.
Program Implementation
- Complete 3 hour Project ROOTS facilitator training
- Assist in development of outreach strategy, including assessing landscape of current organizations and potential partners who work with youth in communities of program focus.
- Facilitate Project ROOTS activities, utilizing the Project ROOTS toolkit, with two cohorts of youth (elementary and middle school age youth in the community/ teens at the YTC). ROOTS programming will take place for 1-2 hours, on a weekly basis. The duration of programming and number of sessions for each group will be determined by community and partner availability.
- Complete ROOTS measurement and evaluation tools with youth participants
- Facilitate youth advisory body to promote meaningful youth engagement and provide youth voice in PYD programming development and tools.
Project ROOTS Expansion & Community Engagement
- Support the development and expansion of community, youth transition center and in-school partnerships and programming by meeting with local stakeholders, tabling, and presenting information about the Project ROOTS program at community events and participating in local webinars, youth coalitions and human trafficking prevention advisory committee meetings.
- Maintain Project ROOTS website updates.
POSITION SPECIAL RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Must be available for occasional local travel (within San Diego County)
- Must successfully pass live scan background check.
- Available for special events or trainings on evenings and weekends

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Experience in public speaking, group trainings and presentations
- Strong communication skills, oral and written and excellent organizational skills
- Experience and functional knowledge of gender integration, social inclusion, adolescent girls and young women programming, and positive youth development.
- Understanding of and strong commitment to the principles of diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging.
- Ability to integrate collaborative approaches with professional peers.
- Demonstrated understanding of best practices and willingness to stay abreast of and adapt to emerging approaches in the sector.
- Proven ability to learn quickly, apply knowledge, manage deadlines, work independently with minimal supervision on familiar assignments, submit high-quality work plans, and prioritize workloads.
- Abilities in a second language (French, Spanish, and/or Farsi) preferred.
- Good interpersonal skills with ability to build strong relationships with staff, current and potential donors, partners, and government representatives at all levels in a culturally sensitive manner.
- Proficient in MS Office (Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook)
- Knowledge in / ability to learn basic website development and ADOBE/CANVA tools (preferred)
- Development philosophy in keeping with Global Communities’ mission, vision, core values, and approach to integrated, community-driven programming.
- Ability to review and interpret data would be an advantage.
Qualifications
- Undergraduate degree in a related field or 4 years of related work experience or an undergraduate degree in a related
- At least a year of experience with youth mentorship, program facilitation and curriculum development
- Knowledge and understanding of human trafficking and adolescent gender empowerment programs, survivor-centered and trauma-informed approaches.

Location and Work Schedule
This selected candidate can be based in San Diego, California. Candidates must be authorized to work the US without any restriction.This role is on a hybrid/telework schedule. The selected candidate is expected to work at least twice as week (Tuesday, Wednesday, or Thursday) from either our San Diego or Silver Spring office and the remainder of the week from an approved remote location.
Salary and Compensation
The estimated salary for this position is between 50,002 – 62,502. Final salary will be based on several factors including qualifications, geographic location, experience, and internal equity. Global Communities provides a comprehensive benefits package; please note that this position is not eligible for allowances.
