The Alfred P. Sloan Foundation’s Technology program seeks to hire a motivated, dynamic Program Associate who will support grantmaking and serve as a thought partner to the Program Director. This is a two-year position, potentially renewable for a third year.
Major Responsibilities
The Program Associate works closely with the Program Director on program strategy, scanning the landscape of potential grantees, reviewers, events, and projects for further investigation. Much of the Foundation’s work takes place through iterative revisions of and comments on grant proposals and internal memoranda, and the Program Associate must be skilled at expressing complex ideas in straightforward writing (and helping others to do so). On a day-to-day basis, the Program Associate triages inbound Letters of Inquiry and over time will take primary responsibility for elements of the grant workflow, sourcing external reviewers and developing grants under the supervision of the Program Director.
The Program Associate also supports grant management processes, including review of grant reports and financial statements and responding to grantee inquiries. With input from the Program Director, the Associate will also conceive and lead a program of activities to facilitate more robust communication and collaboration among grantees. The Program Associate may be involved in other research, communications, writing, and philanthropy-related projects as opportunities arise.
Some travel is to be expected, and the Program Associate will need to be able to display careful judgment when representing the Foundation at meetings and workshops and when communicating with external partners.
Education and Experience
An ideal candidate will combine deep familiarity with the natural, social, and/or information sciences with a broad curiosity about technology as applied to the research enterprise; PhD or equivalent experience preferred, as a nuanced understanding of universities and other research institutions will be crucial for success. Strong communication and organizational skills required, as is at least some familiarity with contemporary computational and data science tools. Self-motivation and the ability to work independently are important, as is a strong sense of humility in the service of the Foundation’s mission and grantees.
The Program Associate is a term-limited position of two years (with the option of renewing for a third). She/he/they will gain systemic exposure to emerging technologies and their relationship to the production and dissemination of knowledge, experience that could be valuable to any number of career trajectories.
Work Schedule and Compensation
Employees of the Foundation are expected to work in the Sloan offices in Rockefeller Center, NYC during normal work hours from Tuesday-Thursday and may work remotely on Mondays and Fridays, except when job commitments require presence in the office.
The Foundation offers a generous benefit package.
The salary range for this position is $95,000 – $105,000.
HOW TO APPLY
Interested candidates must submit a personalized cover letter and resume/CV via email to [email protected] with “LAST NAME – Program Associate, Technology” in the subject line.
