The Role
The University of Chicago Education Lab is seeking a Program Manager to support our research portfolio, including the Personalized Learning Initiative. The Personalized Learning Initiative (PLI) is a nation-wide R&D initiative to scale the benefits of tutoring. The Program Manager is responsible for supporting the Associate Director of the Education Lab in establishing and maintaining a diverse network of program partners and stakeholders who are collaborating in the multi-year PLI initiative. This includes liaising with educators, school leaders, tutoring vendors, district officials, research staff and faculty, and civic and philanthropic partners to achieve the goals of the PLI project. In particular, this role will provide support in standing up high-quality school-based tutoring interventions in a manner that enables the research study. This role will be asked to build and maintain strong, strategic relationships with key site-based stakeholders and communicate results and key information across networks, including to study team leadership. This role will provide a unique opportunity to support this multi-year initiative, and other key projects with the Education Lab portfolio, by facilitating communication, and assisting with administrative and logistical tasks.

Job Summary

The job manages academic, research, clinical or administrative programs.


  • Serves as a representative of the Education Lab in meetings with external partners and stakeholders.

  • Supports the Associate Director of the Education Lab in moving forward new projects and initiatives through operational support, preliminary research, and identification of potential resources.

  • Ensures smooth collaboration with key partners and stakeholders by establishing and maintaining effective communication channels; this could take the form of recurring meetings, regular update emails, and one-on-one conversations with external partners.

  • Works with the Associate Director and other leaders within the Education Lab to ensure that projects and initiatives progress in accordance with contractual obligations and the expectations of key stakeholders.

  • Develops short- and medium-term priorities based on a strategic understanding of how various stakeholders work together within each project site; maintains a focus on supporting the execution of research study goals and satisfying the key stakeholders involved.

  • Translates research priorities to school-based interventions and, as appropriate, seeks out ways to leverage current school-based interventions in pursuit of research objectives.

  • Communicates findings or key programmatic information to external audiences as needed.

  • Engages in problem solving to understand how to translate district and study team priorities to a school-based context in a manner that preserves Education Lab reputation and strong partner relationships. 

  • Plans, coordinates, and manages events and meetings; researches logistics, assists with planning and preparing presentations, event outreach, and post-event write ups.

  • Develops and communicates program priorities and performance standards and assesses operations using these criteria. Plans and conducts quality assurance reviews and recommends changes as appropriate.

  • Manages program budgets and recommends or makes budgetary recommendations.

  • Performs other related work as needed.

Minimum Qualifications


Minimum requirements include a college or university degree in related field.

Work Experience:

Minimum requirements include knowledge and skills developed through 5-7 years of work experience in a related job discipline.


Preferred Qualifications


  • Advanced degree strongly preferred.


  • Meaningful experience in a public K-12 school setting; as a teacher, counselor, curriculum specialist, or other intervention service staff.

  • Meaningful experience in a business, non-profit, or entrepreneurial setting. With the experience working collaboratively across several different types of audiences.

Preferred Competencies

  • Ability to work independently and in a group setting.

  • Ability to problem solve given ambiguous or unclear information or directives in a manner that preserves strong relationships with internal team members and external partners.

  • Ability to manage up to leadership team by communicating key components of information from the school context to inform research and policy priorities.

  • Strong time management and project management skills with a success in roles requiring execution of multiple tasks while responding to multiple priorities with little supervision.

  • Demonstrated ability to build and maintain relationships, and work effectively in a collaborative research environment.

  • Proven ability to work with efficiency, flexibility, and good humor.

  • Track record delivering high-level results within expected time frame.

  • Demonstrated ability to pay attention to key details for program success and elevate new or time sensitive information to key personnel on internal and external teams. 

  • Clear writing and communication skills.

  • Strong problem-solving skills and ability to proactively manage risks.

  • Demonstrated judgment and discretion in the handling of sensitive information.

  • Spanish language proficiency strongly encouraged apply.
