Program Manager, Community Science- R&C Community Science

The Natural History Museums of Los Angeles County (NHMLAC) include the Natural History Museum in Exposition Park, La Brea Tar Pits in Hancock Park, and the William S. Hart Museum in Newhall. The museums hold one of the world’s most extensive and valuable collections of natural and cultural history—more than 35 million objects—used for groundbreaking scientific and historical research, and community engagement. From NHM’s opening in 1913 as the very first museum in Los Angeles, the organization has entered an exciting new era of transformation with building projects and campaigns, exhibitions, community outreach and impactful audience engagement.

The Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County is seeking a Program Manager for our Research & Collections Community Science department. The Program Manager provides management and support for the Community Science (CS) office in various areas including programs & metrics tracking, existing and new CS projects, communications & website, partnership & relationship building, administrative paperwork, and anti-racism efforts in our work. Support NHMLA’s existing community scientists and cultivate new NHMLA community scientists. Develop and maintain relationships with community-based organizations (CBOs) and other partner organizations. Represent NHMLA’s Community Science program internally and externally.

Responsibilities for this position include, but are not limited to: 

• Run Community Science Programs, Events, and Projects.
• Plan, implement, and evaluate community science programs on- and offsite for youth, adult, and mixed audiences.
• Provide educational outreach through programs, tabling, classes, field trips, and other such activities.
• Work with partner organizations and CBOs to develop and build relationships, and plan on/offsite community science events and programs.
• As needed, supervise other staff, students, and volunteers while working at, organizing, or managing community science events and programs.
• Manage and/or support CS projects (i.e. City Nature Challenge, Bat Roost Counts, LA Nature Map,  Nature Gardens Species list, RASCals, SLIME, Southern California Squirrel Survey, Elephant Hill, etc.).
• Create and order CS supplies and outreach materials for programs and projects.

This position has the following requirements: 

• Bachelor’s or higher degree in environmental/outdoor education or museum/community related field (science education, environmental justice, community organizing, biology, environmental studies, ecology, botany, geology, museum studies, etc).
• 1-3 years of experience in community science, field study projects, environmental justice, and/or community organizing.
• 1-3 years of experience developing and facilitating educational programs.
• Preference will be given to those who have conducted programs in South Los Angeles, East L.A.  and neighborhoods adjacent to the Natural History Museum and/or other park-poor neighborhoods.
• 1-2 years experience in coordinating projects.
• Experience engaging audiences through social media.
• Experience managing volunteers (adult and teen).
• Bilingual in Spanish and English highly preferred but not required.

Hourly range for this position is $26.00 with experience plus excellent benefits. This position is Full-Time Temporary for the first 4 months of hire and then will transition to a Part Time Regular position.
