Program Manager – Research – School of Dentistry

UTHealth Houston’s School of Dentistry is hiring for a Program Manager – Research to join their team of professionals. The Program Manager will assist the Associate Dean for Research in overseeing the general operations of the research agenda for the Office of Research. Develops, plans, and analyzes research activities, including workflow planning and research compliance analysis in the School of Dentistry.

Position Key Accountabilities:

• Partner with the Associate Dean to steer the research agenda and shape the strategic plan for the Office of Research.
• Aid in devising strategies for securing funding, overseeing administrative aspects of large grants, and contributing to programmatic grant development. Engage in project analysis, resource evaluation, and obstacle assessment for comprehensive project management.
• Proofread and edit submitted materials, employing technical writing skills to assist in crafting grant applications and reports.
• Establish deadlines, allocate responsibilities, support Principal Investigators in monitoring project progress, and provide supervision and guidance to research and administrative staff.
• Foster collaboration between clinicians and research scientists, both internal and external to the University. Manage human subjects/IRB, animal protocols/IACUC, and biosafety protocols. Stay informed about new protocols relevant to the Office of Research.
• Contribute to the annual budget, assist in negotiating service contracts, report on progress, and authorize research expenditures as assigned.
• Keep upper management informed of key activities.
• Assist in preparing multi-PI and complex research and training grant proposals for private foundations and governmental agencies. Offer advice and resource information for long-term strategic planning of research initiatives. Collaborate with the Office of Sponsored Projects and the Research Office awards team on grant submissions and oversight. Contribute to the development of templates for various components of research proposals.
• Contribute to developing strategies for securing funding, providing administrative oversight for programmatic grants, and participating in related advisory boards, strategic planning committees, and program retreats. Perform project analyses and evaluate resources, outcomes, and obstacles to project completion.
• Conduct or supervise research-related training for internal, clinical, and community groups.
• Manage and assist in preparing annual reports for ongoing strategic plans within the area.
• Communicate with the community and professionals to share objectives and outcomes. Prepare and deliver oral presentations at professional and stakeholder meetings. Participate in committees as deemed appropriate for the Office of Research.
• Manage Human Resources activities or provide direct input on recruiting, selection, hiring and termination, training, professional development, mentoring, counseling, performance evaluations, and salary planning.

Position Summary:

Develops, plans, maintains research and policy analysis. Oversees the general running of the laboratory. 

Position Key Accountabilities:

Manages the research agenda for the area.

Sets deadlines, assigns responsibilities, monitors the progress of projects, and provides supervision and guidance to the research personnel, research nurses and administrative staff.

Facilitates collaboration between clinicians and research scientist, internal and external to the University.

Assists with the annual budget, negotiates service contracts, reports on progress and authorizes expenditures.

Informs upper management of key activities.

Assists in grant proposals to both private foundations and governmental agencies. May work closely with the Office of Sponsored Projects on the submission of grants.

May conduct or supervise training related to research for internal, hospital, and community groups.

Manages on-going strategic plans for the area.

Communicates with community and professionals to share objectives and outcomes. Prepares/makes oral presentations at professional meetings. May also participate in committees as deemed appropriate for the department.

Manages Humans Resources activities or gives direct input for direct reports in regards to: recruiting and selection, hiring and termination, training, professional development, mentoring, counseling, performance evaluations, and salary planning.

Stays abreast of new and updated protocols for the department.

Other duties as assigned.

Certification/Skills:

Depending on research may require advanced level grant writing skills.
Depending on research may require Registered Nurse within the State of Texas.
Depending on research may require Clinical Research Coordinator certification.
May require program specific certifications.

Preferred Skills:

Fundamental understanding of the structure and requirements of research grants.

Fundamental understanding of basic, translational and clinical research methods.

Excellent communication skills, both written and oral.

Previous experience in the management of a multi-PI grant or Center.

Experience in grant management including preparing, planning, writing and compiling both administrative and scientific grant components.

Experience in trainee and staff research training.

Minimum Education:

Bachelor’s degree in science or a health administration related field.

Minimum Experience:

Five years of applicable experience.
May substitute required experience with equivalent years of education beyond the minimum education requirement.

Physical Requirements:

Exerts up to 20 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 10 pounds frequently and/or a negligible amount constantly to move objects.
This position may include work involving potentially hazardous chemical, biological or radioactive agents.
