The Veatch
Program
is the national philanthropic giving program of the
Unitarian Universalist Congregation at Shelter Rock (UUCSR) in
Manhasset, New York. The Veatch Program works toward fulfilling
UUCSR’s congregational mission to build a more just and joyful
world. We provide funding for social change organizations led by
people who are directly impacted by injustice, as well as core
denominational institutions. Veatch has been a leader in
progressive philanthropy since 1959. 

Veatch prioritizes community organizing, base building, and
leadership development. Veatch grantees create their own solutions,
fight for more equitable social policies and hold industries
accountable. They make a better world for everyone through
organizing and building a strong democracy. Our professional staff
members are known for their partnership and leadership in
philanthropy, engaging in strategic initiatives that serve Veatch
grantees and our mission.

Position
Overview
 
The Program
Officer will engage with our long-term, multi-issue grantees across
the country, as well as prospective grantees. This position
requires and maintains a base of knowledge and relationships in the
social justice and community change fields, represents Veatch and
the UUCSR congregation in philanthropy, contributes to grantmaking
strategy and implementation, and supports learning and engagement
within the institution. This full-time position reports to the
Executive Director of the Veatch Program.  
 

Key
Responsibilities
 

    Maintain relationships with current
    grantees to monitor and assess the progress of long-term grants as
    part of a $13 million/200 grantees funding program, ensuring smooth
    processing of each grant cycle.
    Maintain a pipeline of potential
    grantees by identifying primarily grassroots, regional and national
    organizations in low-income, Black, Latinx, Indigenous and other
    people of color communities that engage in base building and
    organizing for progressive social change and related social change
    efforts.
    Evaluate grant requests to make
    recommendations to the Veatch Executive Director and Program Team
    and prepare written recommendations for the Veatch Board of
    Governors.
    Develop and present programming to
    the Veatch Board of Governors approximately monthly, and to the
    Shelter Rock congregation periodically, to raise awareness
    regarding grantee impact and to provide on-the-ground insights into
    efforts within social justice movements.
    Collaborate within the team to make
    recommendations on overall grantmaking strategy.
    Collaborate with other grantmakers to
    ensure the strength of the grantee field, Veatch grantees, and our
    partners in philanthropy.
    Take active roles representing Veatch
    priorities in funder affinity groups and social justice
    organizations.

Qualifications and Desired Experience:
The
ideal candidate for this position will have at least 5-8 years
progressive experience within an organizing context. Grantmaking
experience is strongly preferred, though not required. We are
seeking candidates who have a solid understanding of grant funding
within the nonprofit world, breadth of expertise and hands-on
experience in social issues, policies, and change strategies, and a
demonstrated commitment to working for social change. Experience
working as part of a distributed/remote team is preferred. Veatch
maintains clear expectations and practices for collaboration and
accountability in our remote/hybrid
work.    

Ideal candidates will also
have:   

    Passion for the mission and work of
    the Veatch program and a genuine interest in engaging energetically
    with our grantees.
    Ability and commitment to working
    with individuals and organizations representing a mix of racial,
    ethnic, religious and socio-economic backgrounds.
    Hands-on experience in the kinds of
    programs we support, such as grassroots community organizing,
    advocacy, labor organizing, or civic engagement is
    required.
    Understanding and acceptance of the
    philosophy and values of Unitarian Universalism and the program
    priorities of the UUCSR Veatch Program.
    Excellent writing and verbal
    communications skills.
    Capacity for taking initiative and
    working both independently and collaboratively.
    Able to manage and meet competing
    deadlines and at a fast pace.
    Team approach, strong collaboration
    skills, high social and relational capacity, and positive
    attitude.
    Highly organized and able to
    multitask.
    Ability to work remotely and in
    hybrid settings, maintaining accountability and adhering to hybrid
    work practices.
    Experience using grantmaking
    technology systems such as Foundant and customer relationship
    management software such as Salesforce.
    Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent
    experience.

Location 
This role can be based from
anywhere in the United States. A dedicated location for working
remotely is required. UUCSR provides office equipment, supplies,
and cell phone reimbursement. Occasional in-person attendance at
site visits and meetings throughout the U.S, and periodic meetings
at UUCSR’s location in Manhasset, New York, will be
required.    

Compensation 
The general salary
range for this position is $73,440 – $91,800. Within this range,
individual pay is indexed by the location of the candidate.
Applicants who advance to the interview stage will receive specific
salary information for their location. In addition, the actual
starting salary of the candidate is commensurate with the amount,
breadth, and depth of relevant experience, as well as education,
additional professional training and certifications, and other
factors relevant to the position.
