Under the overall guidance from the Country Representative of IUCN Bangladesh and the Programme Manager, Species and Habitats, the Programme Associate will be responsible for the following matters related to the project:

Specific Duties:

The Programme Associate will be responsible for the following matter related to the project:

  • Lead the project team to implement the project by developing and executing the work plan, and designing and conducting surveys, assessments, research, and field interventions.
  • Provide guidance and lead the team in data collection from the fields on human-wildlife conflict to understand the nature, scale, and related attributes (e.g. elephant movement routes, corridors, environment, social structures, nature of loss and damage caused by elephants) that are affecting the conflicts.
  • Provide guidance and lead the teamin identification and selection of elephant non-preferred crop farmers, provide them training and non-preferred crop cultivation support like seed, fertilizers, fencing materials etc.
  • Coordinate and guide field team to the formation of Wildlife Response Teams from host communities with support from Bangladesh Forest Department and, FAO.
  • Coordinate and guide field team in the selection of non-preferred crop varieties in consultation with community people and DAE.
  • Maintain coordination with FAO for the requirement collection and distribution of FAO procured non-preferred crop planting materials and other agriculture inputs
  • Coordinate with BFD Bangladesh Forest Department (BFD) for wildlife response team formation, capacity development, equipment distribution and maintain communication with wildlife response team, community people, BFD and Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) staff
  • Lead to organize capacity building activities for Wildlife Response Team to ensure their effective engagement as per the project documents.
  • Support the project team and guidance in identification and selection of elephant non-preferred crop farmers, provide them training and non-preferred crop cultivation support like seed, fertilizers, fencing materials etc.
  • Support the project team to maintain regular communication with Elephant Non-preferred crop farmers and collect crop raiding information to measure the effectiveness of Elephant Non-preferred crop.
  • Lead developing monitoring protocol with specific indicators in line with the signed LoA and use it for project performance monitoring from activity to results levels.
  • Lead in analyzing the risk of project activity implementation and take proactive measures to address those risks in advance in coordination with project team.
  • Lead in organization of dialogues, discussions, and meetings with FAO, Bangladesh Forest Department, Department of Agriculture Extension, and international agencies as needed to implement the project.
  • Support to the project team and guidance in organizing different project events with people of concern and other stakeholders (e.g. discussions, meetings, workshops, training sessions, knowledge sharing events, and promotional opportunities for the project) in Cox’s Bazar.
  • Lead in collecting information on the impacts, lessons, and challenges of human-wildlife conflict mitigation measures and Elephant Non-preferred crop cultivation initiatives undertaken by the project in and around the camp area.
  • Support to the project team in developing, location selection, installation, and distribution of project communication materials like signboards, posters and flyers.
  • Lead in preparing project documents and reports, including donor reports, event reports, case studies, factsheets, and web-stories.
  • Ensure that IUCN’s and FAO’s policies and mandates as outlined in the LoA is duly complied with in all project activities.
  • Undertake any other tasks that may be assigned by the Country Representative of IUCN Bangladesh and the Programme Manager, Species and Habitats.

Requirements:

  • MSc in Zoology/Wildlife Biology/Forestry/Agriculture/Environmental Science, or other related field
  • 3-5 years’ working experience in the relevant to the terms of reference and 2 year managerial experience
  • Excellent presentation, writing and spoken communication skills in English and Bangla are essential.
