UNDP is the United Nations largest agency with a mandate to eradicate poverty, through sustainable and inclusive human development. UNDP has been in Nigeria since the country became independent in 1960 providing capacity building and policy development support to the Federal Government of Nigeria in areas of Governance & Peace Building, Inclusive growth, and Sustainable Development. UNDP continues to support the government in the implementation of development interventions aimed at meeting medium to long term goals enshrined in National and Subnational development plans as well as the Sustainable Development Goals. The goal of UNDP is to improve the lives of the people of Nigeria, especially the poorest and most vulnerable, and to ensure a future that offers equality, dignity, and opportunity for all. UNDP works in partnership with the federal Government of Nigeria, development partners, UN agencies, civil society and local communities to help identify local solutions to meet global and national development challenges through a range of interventions that combine UNDP’s expertise and comparative advantage in the areas of Governance & Peace Building, Inclusive growth and Sustainable Development.

Context

UNDP has been in Nigeria since the country became independent in 1960 providing capacity building and policy development support to the Federal Government of Nigeria in areas of Governance & Peace Building, Inclusive growth and Sustainable Development. The crises in Nigeria are closely linked to conflict, fragility, and insecurity. The United Nations is leading efforts by humanitarian, development, and peacebuilding partners, delivering urgent aid and building resilience among vulnerable people over the longer term. Swift delivery of aid, combined with early recovery and emergency development work, can address and prevent famine and ensure durable peace. Building resilience to future shocks is vital. This means creating opportunities for people to quickly earn an income to support their families and ensuring basic services are restored. The Governance and Peace Building Programme is configured to respond to Nigeria’s challenges in the area of governance, conflict mitigation and peace building.

Task description

Under the direct supervision of Team Lead, Governance, Peace & Security (GPS), the UN Volunteer will undertake the following tasks: – Support the mainstreaming of conflict prevention and peacebuilding approaches and strate-gies in UNDP country office programming and projects; – Assist in a collaborative preparation/revision of project documents, Annual Work Plans (AWP) and other documents in the area of work; – Participate in and assist in joint conflict analysis exercises; – Support the development of conflict prevention and peacebuilding indicators for all projects and at country office level and support the continuous monitoring and analysis of the pro-gramme context. – Support the provision of high quality analysis to UNDP management, programmes and pro-jects, on national and sub-national peace and conflict trends, to determine strategic entry points, programme strategies as well as to manage and mitigate risks and crisis; – Work with the team to ensure that projects activities are formulated according to UNDP´s best practice on conflict prevention and conflict sensitivity with full involvement of all rele-vant counterparts and partners; – Support programme and project teams to identify conflict prevention and peacebuilding linkages across programmes and to adjust programmes in ways that leverage on these link-ages. – Support researches and analyses information on existing and new partners; – Assist the Team Leader in helping to build strategic alliances and partnerships for peace and development related interventions with government, non-state actors, donors, UN agencies and civil society; – Work with the team to establish close working relationships and creates programmatic link-ages with relevant government agencies; non-state actors, UN Agencies, bi-lateral and multi-lateral donors, private sector, civil society.

This assignment is funded by the Government of Finland and therefore specific criteria apply. ELIGIBILITY – Candidates must be Finnish nationals and must have knowledge of Finnish or Swedish. – Candidates must be between 18 and 29 years of age at the time of application (the above age range does not apply) – Candidates who already served on a UN Youth Volunteer assignment funded by the Government of Finland are not eligible. The selection will be done by the UN Host Entity at the level of the country of assignment. 1 years of experience in or demonstrated experience in governance and/or peacebuilding. Previous experience as a volunteer and/or experience of another culture (i.e volunteer work or internship) is highly desirable.

Living conditions and remarks

The assignment will take place in the nation’s capital, Abuja (Hardship classification C). The country is viewed as a multinational state, as it is inhabited by over 500 ethnic groups, of which the three largest are the Hausa, Igbo and Yoruba; these ethnic groups speak over 500 different languages, and are identified with wide variety of cultures. The official language is English. Nigeria continues to face terrorist attacks in the northeast, a restive insurgency in the Delta region, and the perennial inter-communal violence across the middle belt. At the root of the security challenges are high levels of poverty, joblessness, growing numbers of frustrated youth, and the degradation of natural resources and climate stressors. The critical and immediate challenge is ensuring the welfare of the internally displaced people, host communities, and population in the North- East. General crime is also prevalent. UN staff members are advised to stay only in assessed hotels. Assessed hotels list available with Agency Security Focal Points. The currency used in Nigeria is called Nigeria Naira (the currency code for Naira is NGN.
