The RNI is a Member States-led initiative, guided by a core group of champions, including the Pacific atoll countries. Its objective is to press forward efforts towards protecting the statehood of Pacific atoll countries, preserving their sovereignty and safeguarding the rights and heritage of affected populations. In this regard, the RNI aims to mobilize the needed political momentum for prompt action at all levels to highlight the climate emergency facing the Pacific atoll countries and inspire global and local action, including through intergovernmental processes of the United Nations. In particular, the RNI aims to advance partnerships that empower the agency of frontline communities, support adaptation plans and promote better strategic planning and informed policymaking for Pacific atoll countries. 
Under the supervision of the Head of the RNI Secretariat, the incumbent will carry out the following activities: 

Strategy development & coordination 

  • Helps design and advance a strategy for supporting youth empowerment for the Pacific atoll countries
  • Coordinates international and regional events providing opportunities for direct advocacy, outreach, and network
  • Support the emergence of a youth forum consisting of youth representatives of the Pacific atoll countries and help build a wider network with youth in the region and around the world

Project coordination:

  • Liaises with youth stakeholders on the planning and implementing project activities requiring their participation.  Ensures all operational structures, systems, and processes are in line with UNOPS policies and procedures.
  • Tracks implementation of deliverables and monitors and evaluates progress.

Communications:

  • Tracks relevant data collection and generates analysis as relevant to achieving the strategic objectives of the RNI.
  • Communicates key project developments with other RNI project teams as relevant.
  • Oversees the preparation of reports on the project activities.
  • Coordinates the organizing and planning of events and conferences, including the Conference of the Parties (COPs) and other conferences, meetings, side events and activities.

Education:

  • Advanced university degree (Master’s degree) preferably in Political Science, Governance, Development or other relevant fields is required.
  • Two (2) additional years of relevant experience, in combination with a relevant first-level university (bachelor’s degree or equivalent), may substitute for the requirement of a master’s degree.

Required Experience:

  • At least two (2) years of relevant professional experience in climate action, migration, and/or programme/project management is required.
  • Demonstrated experience in taking engagements to major international conferences (e.g. COPs, international climate events) as platforms for advocacy is required
  • Desirable experience (the following experience is optional candidates who do not have it are welcome to apply):
  • Experience in evidence-based approach to assessing vulnerabilities of populations preferably in the context of climate, environment or sustainable development is desired.

Language:

  • Fluency in oral and written English is required.
  • Knowledge of other UN languages is an advantage.
