Duties and Responsibilities

Org. setting and reporting Created in December 1999, the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR) is the designated focal point in the United Nations system for the coordination of efforts to reduce disasters and to ensure synergies among the disaster reduction activities of the United Nations and regional organizations and activities in both developed and less developed countries. Led by the United Nations Special Representative of the Secretary General for Disaster Risk Reduction (SRSG), UNDRR has over 140 staff located in its headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland, and in regional offices. Specifically, UNDRR guides, monitors, analyses and reports on progress in the implementation of the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction 2015-2030, supports regional and national implementation of the Framework and catalyses action and increases global awareness to reduce disaster risk working with U.N. Member States and a broad range of partners and stakeholders, including civil society, the private sector, parliamentarians and the science and technology community. This internship is for a period between 3 to 6 months and is designed to be full time and in person. Interns work five days per week under the direct supervision of the Programme officers. Duties and Responsibilities Daily responsibilities among other duties are the following: – Support climate change portfolio, including UNDRR’s comprehensive risk management (CRM) programme and engagement in global climate change processes on adaptation and loss and damage. – Provide support to strengthen data collection, processing, analysis and standards through the following portfolios managed by the Bonn office: (i) Monitoring of Sendai Framework and Sustainable Development Goals (SDG); (ii) Disaster losses and damages tracking; (iii) Data Strategy; (iv) Disaster-related Statistics; and (v) Monitoring and evaluation (M&E) of the Early Warnings for all Initiative (EW4ALL) – Assist in drafting and preparing background documents, reports, issue briefs, talking points, articles, case studies, presentations, etc., based on and including desk-based research. – Support on research, development and review of technical and methodological guidance and documentation, and training packages related to the workstreams listed above. – Assist in the organization of and participates in events, workshops, webinars, and trainings.

Qualifications/special skills

To qualify for an internship with the United Nations, applicants must meet one of the following requirements:

  • be enrolled in, or have completed, a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher) in fields related to programme management, environment affairs, including climate change or disaster risk reduction, environmental or social sciences, geography, economics, statistics, or data sciences.
  • be enrolled in, or have completed, the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelor’s level or equivalent) in fields related to programme management and environment affairs, including climate change or disaster risk reduction, environmental sciences or social sciences, geography, economics, statistics, or data sciences.
  • No working experience is required to apply for the United Nations Internship Programme. Applicants must be a student in the final year of the first university degree (bachelor or equivalent), Master’s or Ph.D. Programme or equivalent, or have completed a Bachelor’s, Master’s or PH.D. Programme. Do you meet any of the above criteria? If yes, please indicate which one and attach proof to the application. Languages

  • English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Fluency in English is required for this internship.
