This position is located in the Office of the Under-Secretary-General (OUSG) of the Department of Economic and Social Affairs (DESA).

Responsibilities

Within delegated authority and under the supervision of the Chief of Office of the Under-Secretary-General for Economic and Social Affairs, the Programme Management Officer will provide support to the Principal Economic Affairs Officer, Strategic Planning and Communications Service, OUSG/DESA, by being responsible for the following duties:

  • Participates, supports in the development, coordination and implementation of assigned programmes/projects, etc.; monitors and analyzes programme/project development and implementation; reviews relevant documents and reports; identifies problems and issues to be addressed and proposes corrective actions; liaises with relevant parties; identifies and tracks follow-up actions.
  • Researches, analyzes and presents information gathered from diverse sources, to support preparation of internal informational digests, including knowledge products by the UN system and stakeholders around the key topics identified.
  • Assists with development policy notes, and position papers, including the review and analysis of issues and trends related to strategic integration and policy coherence as applied to DESA’s normative, analytical, and operational mandates and priorities as well as to the tasking by the Executive Committee on the follow-up to the report.,
  • Undertakes survey initiatives; designs data collection tools; reviews, analyzes and interprets responses, identifies problems/issues and prepares conclusions.
  • Prepares various written outputs, e.g. draft background papers, analysis, sections of reports and studies, inputs to publications, etc.
  • Provides substantive support to consultative and other meetings, conferences, etc., to include proposing agenda topics, identifying participants, preparation of documents and presentations, etc.
  • Participates in or lead field missions, including provision of guidance to external consultants, government officials and other parties and drafting mission summaries, etc.
  • Coordinates activities related to preparation of policy briefs and other short-form assets
  • Collects and analyzes data to identify trends or patterns and provide insights through graphs, charts, tables and reports using data visualization methods to enable data-driven planning, decision-making, presentation and reporting.
  • Performs other duties as required.

Education

  • Advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent degree) economics, social sciences, international relations or a related field is required. A first-level university degree in combination with additional two years of qualifying work experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.

Work Experience

  • A minimum of five years of progressively responsible experience in project or programme management, administration or related area is required. Experience in policy analysis and strategic planning related to economic and social development issues is required. Experience in the work of the United Nations and the relevant intergovernmental processes is desirable.

Languages

  • English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this post advertised, fluency in English is required. Knowledge of another official United Nations language is an advantage.
