Created in December 1999, the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR) is the designated focal point in the United Nations system for the coordination of efforts to reduce disasters and to ensure synergies among the disaster reduction activities of the United Nations and regional organizations and activities in both developed and less developed countries. Led by the United Nations Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Disaster Risk Reduction (SRSG), UNDRR has over 150 staff located in its headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland, and in regional offices. Specifically, UNDRR guides, monitors, analyses and reports on progress in the implementation of the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction 2015-2030, supports regional and national implementation of the Framework and catalyzes action and increases global awareness to reduce disaster risk working with UN Member States and a broad range of partners and stakeholders, including civil society, the private sector, parliamentarians and the science and technology community. Under the direct supervision of the Head of Inter-agency Cooperation Unit, this temporary position supports the implementation of the UN Plan of Action on Disaster Risk Reduction for Resilience.
Responsibilities
Within delegated authority, the incumbent will be responsible for the following duties: • Develops and maintains strategic, results-focused and action-oriented initiatives and partnerships to support the implementation of UNDRR’s work programme deliverable 3.3.5: Actions on environment and biodiversity in support of disaster risk reduction and climate resilience increased, including through support for scaling up nature-based solution. • Identifies opportunities, follows-up and coordinates UNDRR’s engagement related to the UN Water Action Decade 2018-2028 and the UN system-wide strategy for water and sanitation. • Participates in the development, implementation and evaluation of assigned programmes/projects, etc.; monitors and analyzes programme/project development and implementation; reviews relevant documents and reports; identifies problems and issues to be addressed and proposes corrective actions; liaises with relevant parties; identifies and tracks follow-up actions. • Performs consulting assignments, in collaboration with the client, by planning facilitating workshops, through other interactive sessions and assisting in developing the action plan the client will use to manage the change. • Researches, analyzes and presents information gathered from diverse sources. • Assists in policy development, including the review and analysis of issues and trends, preparation of evaluations or other research activities and studies. • Undertakes survey initiatives; designs data collection tools; reviews, analyzes and interprets responses, identifies problems/issues and prepares conclusions. • Prepares various written outputs, e.g. draft background papers, analysis, sections of reports and studies, inputs to publications, etc. • Provides substantive support to consultative and other meetings, conferences, etc., to include proposing agenda topics, identifying participants, preparation of documents and presentations, etc. • Undertakes outreach activities; conducts training workshops, seminars, etc.; makes presentations on assigned topics/activities. • Participates in or lead field missions, including provision of guidance to external consultants, government officials and other parties and drafting mission summaries, etc. • Coordinates activities related to budget and funding (programme/project preparation and submissions, progress reports, financial statements, etc.) and prepares related documents/reports (pledging, work programme, programme budget, etc.). • Performs other duties as required.

Education
Advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in business administration, management, economics or a related field is required. A first-level university degree in combination with at least two years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.

Work Experience
A minimum of five (5) years of progressively responsible experience in project or programme management, administration or related area is required. A minimum of three (3) years of experience in building partnerships and inter-agency coordination is desirable Experience in disaster risk reduction, sustainable development and climate change is desirable. Work experience in disaster risk reduction relevant aspects of the water agenda, nature-based solutions and biodiversity is desirable. A minimum of two (2) years of relevant experience working for international organizations such as the United Nations is desirable.
Languages
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the post advertised, fluency in English is required. Knowledge of French or Spanish is desirable. NOTE: To be considered fluent in a language, your proficiency level in all four specified areas of the application (reading, writing, speaking, understanding) must be “Fluent”. To be considered to have knowledge of a language, your proficiency level in at least two out of the four specified areas must be “Confident” or “Fluent”.

Special Notice
This position is temporarily available for a period of 364 days. Staff members are subject to the authority of the Secretary-General and to assignment by him. In this context, all staff are expected to move periodically to new functions in their careers in accordance with established rules and procedures. If the selected candidate is a staff member from the United Nations Secretariat, the selection will be administered as a temporary assignment. While this temporary assignment may provide the successful applicant with an opportunity to gain new work experience, the selection for this position is for a limited period and has no bearing on the future incumbency of the post.
