UN Women, grounded in the vision of equality enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations, works for the elimination of discrimination against women and girls; the empowerment of women; and the achievement of equality between women and men as partners and beneficiaries of development, human rights, humanitarian action and peace and security.
In East and Southern Africa Region (ESARO), UN Women works to advance the Women, Peace and Security Agenda, through cultivating an enabling policy environment conducive to the realization of UN Security Council Resolution (UNSCR) 1325 at both regional and national levels through providing comprehensive policy, programmatic, and coordination support to various stakeholders, including Regional Economic Commissions & Regional Mechanisms, Member States, security organs, women’s rights organizations, and other key actors.
In 2023, UN Women and UNODC formalized a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU), that aims to promote gender equality and meeting the specific needs of women and girls when addressing the world drug problem; implementing the Women, Peace, and Security agenda; countering sexual and gender-based violence, organized crime, corruption and terrorism; strengthening crime prevention and building effective criminal justice systems, including in Eastern Africa. In response, UN Women ESARO is partnering with UNODC Regional Office in Eastern Africa under a project tiled: Empowering Every Badge to support the Eastern Africa Police Chiefs Cooperation Organization (EAPCCO) in achieving greater gender equality and empowerment of women in preventing and countering transnational organized crime, sexual and gender-based violence, terrorism, and violent extremism.
Reporting to the Policy Specialist on Women, Peace and Security, the Programme Management Specialist is responsible for planning, implementing, and managing UN Women interventions under this joint initiative between UN Women and UNODC. She/he works in close collaboration with the UN Women programme and operations team in the ESARO, and HQ (New York), Government officials of EAPPCO Member States, multi- and bi-lateral donors, and civil society, ensuring successful UN Women programme implementation under their portfolio.
