Programme Officer

The IUCN Green List of Protected and Conserved Areas (Green List) is a global standard for fair and effective protected areas. It recognises and promotes areas that are achieving success in conservation outcomes, equitable governance, and effective management. This position is part of IUCN’s efforts to scale up the Green List across multiple regions and support countries in the effective management of their protected and conserved areas.

The Green List Programme Officer will support the Green List implementation, data management, dashboard integration, and provide technical support to countries and stakeholders engaged in the Green List process. The role also involves capturing best practices and success stories on the use of technology in protected area management and ensuring quality data for monitoring progress towards Green List standards.

JOB DESCRIPTION

The Programme Officer is responsible for supporting the implementation and expansion of the IUCN Green List program, focusing on data management, technical integration, and country-level support. A key aspect of the role involves managing data systems like Ibex and the Green List dashboard, ensuring seamless integration, accurate data management, and providing technical troubleshooting as needed. This position requires working closely with national coordinators, site managers, and other stakeholders, offering guidance on Green List standards and helping sites meet the criteria for effective and equitable protected area management.

Additionally, the Programme Officer will document best practices, case studies, and success stories to highlight innovative uses of technology in protected area management. Monitoring and reporting on Green List progress, the Officer will support capacity-building activities and ensure quality data flow and availability for decision-making. Through these responsibilities, the Programme Officer will contribute to improving the quality, efficiency, and reach of the Green List initiative, helping countries achieve sustainable conservation outcomes.

 Data Management and Analysis:

• • Oversee data entry, and management for Green List sites and ensure data accuracy and completeness.
• • Maintain databases and data management systems such as Ibex and the Green List dashboard, ensuring effective integration and synchronisation of information across platforms.
• • Oversee data review to ensure it meets the standards for Green List eligibility and site assessment.

Green List Dashboard and Ibex Integration:

• • Collaborate with relevant teams at ESRI to ensure seamless integration between the Green List dashboard and Ibex.
• • Work with software and technical teams to troubleshoot issues, develop solutions, and improve data flow and functionality of the dashboard.
• • Ensure end-users have training and access to the dashboard and data management tools.

Technical Support and Capacity Building:

• • Provide direct technical support to countries and sites engaged in the Green List process, with a focus on data management and workflow support.
• • Develop training materials and conduct capacity-building sessions for stakeholders on data tools, Green List standard, and reporting processes.

Documentation and Knowledge Management:

• • Capture best practices, case studies, and success stories on the use of technology and innovations in protected areas management.
• • Compile and document success stories of Green List implementation for internal and external use.
• • Support the development of knowledge products, such as guidelines, reports, and technical briefs.

Monitoring and Reporting:

• • Track and monitor progress of sites through the Green List process, ensuring timely reporting and progress updates.
• • Contribute to regular reports on Green List implementation progress, outcomes, and challenges, as needed for internal and external stakeholders.
• • Support the analysis of Green List impacts to inform decision-making and strategy adjustments.

Global programme support and personal development:

• • Contribute to the overall Protected and Conserved Areas Team programme implementation
• • Engage in communication and outreach activities to showcase the team’s success stories
• • Participate and support the team in fundraising activities as part of a professional development effort.

KEY DELIVERABLES

• • Accurate and well-maintained data records for Green List sites, integrated across Ibex and the Green List dashboard.
• • High quality periodic reports on Green List process status, country engagement, and technical support provided.
• • Documented case studies and best practices in Green List sites and technology use in protected area management.
• • Training materials and capacity-building sessions for Green List stakeholders.

REQUIREMENTS

• At least 5-7 years of relevant experience in protected areas management, conservation, or data management.
• Demonstrated experience with database management, data integration, and working with digital dashboards and platforms.
• Previous experience with IUCN Green List, protected areas, or similar conservation standards preferred.
• Proficiency in data management systems and tools, with an ability to analyse and synthesise data for reporting purposes.
